Co-writers & Inspiration
My co-writers Davis, Nick and I all met through the Young Entertainment Professionals networking group here in Nashville. I met Davis at a mixer, and we found Nick through the YEP Facebook group, and ultimately we all ended up writing a bunch of songs together for Nick's debut EP.
This song was one of those rare writes where we didn't know where it was going when we started. We had no idea what to write about, but I started playing a groove, and Nick, never shy about spitting out lyrics, started doing just that. "Old man's Cadillac" set the tone and we worked our way to the hook from there. I generally like a stronger hook, but the song ended up with a great feel, so we decided not to mess with it.
The Frio Trio (dubbed such because we are three cool hombres) has written a bunch of killer songs, but some of them don't quite fit Nick as an artist. "Free and Easy" is one of those. Nick claims it's too "Lumineers," though I don't really hear it that way. But I do agree that it might not be the right fit for him.
About the Recording
After writing the song, it stuck with me, so I thought I'd work up a home demo. Thinking about who might cut this song led me to envision a young guy and girl folkie country/pop duo, so I reworked it ever-so-slightly and got my wife, Dixie, to trade stanzas with me and harmonize on the choruses. The vocals and guitars are live, and the rest are software instruments. I put this together in Garageband 11 in my acoustically untreated writing room.
Feedback
Please let me know what you think about the song! Obviously this isn't a studio quality recording, but all input is always welcome.
