A letter from Head of School:
Dear Parents:
First a shout-out to our Model UN team and their coach Jeffrey Beavers. In just the first year as an Elective club, the Peak team has achieved remarkable results. Our students have participated in two MUN conferences – in Boulder and in Cherry Creek – and each time our team has been voted Best Delegation at the conference.
Our students’ achievement is proof that The Peak School’s style of teaching and learning and our Common Principles set them up for success beyond our school community. To participate in MUN conferences, high school teams select (or are assigned) a particular country to represent, and particular global issues to address. On Saturday, for instance, our students were the delegation from the United States, and they were charged with making (and carrying) a motion regarding border disputes in the South China Sea and in the Arctic region.
First the team must thoroughly research their positions. At Peak, all students in the MUN club worked together on this demanding research. The students who will comprise the delegation and represent the team at the conference must then form positions on the issue, and draft their motions for the assembled delegates to vote on. Our delegates’ task at the conference is to caucus with other high schools’ delegations, and persuade them to support their motions. This requires the ability to articulate one’s position clearly, to be able to listen carefully to and appreciate other points of view, demonstrate respect for others, and successfully reach common ground.
These are exactly the skills that we as a community work on in each of our classes, in our Forums, and in all our interactions. It is so gratifying to see our MUN Club members “exceed” in real-life DMOs when interacting with their peers from other schools. Congratulations Jeffrey, Kira and Kayla, and the whole MUN team!
As there won’t be a Peak Pioneer newsletter next week, I want to express now my thanks to the Peak faculty and staff, students, parents, and board, for all that you do and give to The Peak School. I’ve never been part of such a caring, supportive community. I feel honored and proud to serve you all.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your families.
With warmest regards,
