In this world, Hate never yet dispelled hate.
Only love dispels hate.  This is the law, ancient and inexhaustible.

The Buddha, Dhammapada

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
Matthew 5:39

Dear Friends:

The motto I chose for SmallsLIVE is - "We are dedicated to World Peace through Music".  Occasionally  I've been derided for this.  I've gotten some emails from folks who have called me "naive" and "simplistic" for believing this.  But these deriders have not seen what I have seen - concert halls filled with people of all nationalities joined together, communing to the sounds of jazz.  Jazz music knows no cultural boundaries.  From the bosom of the African-American culture to the entire world - Jazz Music is a gift to humanity.  It is a music that speaks of joy, sorrow, love, sex and spiritual unity.

I just returned from a marvelous week in Padova, Italy for the Padova Jazz Festival.   My profound thanks to Gabriella Piccolo, Enzo Capua, Michela Parolin and everyone else that was involved in the festival.  It is now my third year returning to this festival doing our "SmallsLIVE Presents" show.  I brought my own trio (bassist Tyler Mitchell and drummer Anthony Pinciotti).  We played a trio concert and then later in the evening a concert with invited Italian jazz musicians.  There was no rehearsal necessary - even though we never played together the language of jazz was understood by all.  All the concerts were packed and sold-out.  The hall was filled with folks that we had seen before from previous years and new faces.  Eager students packed the floor, sitting where ever they could.  The reception was overwhelming warm and loving.  We were congratulated and hugged and asked many intelligent questions - how does this music work?  What is the trick?  We shared what we could and by the end of the week Padova was like Smalls Jazz Club, a community and a family.

We must not be overwhelmed by terror.  We must not let ourselves be drummed up into acts of war.  War is never the answer.  Those who kill are few and yet wield a powerful tool that can sway millions.  The media is unreliable and truth is hard to glean.  Everyone has an opinion and a theory.  Resist the temptation to feel retribution.  Horrible actions are tragic but to escalate to grander works of violence will only result in a world-wide disaster.  As Human Beings we must unify spiritually and end the boundaries that separate us.  The key is communication - the communication of the commonality that we all share as residents of Planet Earth.  Music can be that communication.  Musicians, take heed!  Do not cancel your concerts - be brave and play and perform and share.  It is what we need now more than ever.

My prayers for Peace to all.

Spike Wilner
