Besides genes from our parents, we are each a mosaic of viruses, bacteria, and maybe other humans: in the case of twins, bits of each live in the body and brains of the other. An article by David Robson, a BBC feature writer, is a real shocker. He gives us the case of Lydia Fairchild's paternity suit as an example. This was a straightforward court trial to prove her two son's father was who she said he was. "Luckily, at around the same time as the court trial, a scientific paper reported a case in which a woman was apparently not the biological mother of two of her three children." The reason was she was a "chimera" - a individual who is the result of two twins who merged into one body early in development. Being the product of two different cell lines enabled some of her eggs to carry a genome that was different from the rest of her body.

A "chimera" is the fusion of two bodies. "Even non-conjoined twins could be sharing organs without realizing it. During early development, cells can be passed between twins or triplets. Once considered a rare occurrence, we now know it is surprisingly common." When William Chan at the University of Alberta in Edmonton took slices of women's brain tissue and screened their genomes for signs of the Y-chromosome, he discovered around 63% had male cells. In other words, a woman's brain can be speckled with cells from a man's body - if she is a chimera. Because cell lines can differ within a given chimera, it is possible for a mother's gene to be absent from one or all of her children. This article only briefly touches on the high rate of pregnancies that began as twins but quickly reduce to a single - either because of an anomaly in the fetus that the body rejects or because that "extra" is reabsorbed into the mother's body for whatever reason. "Missing twins" of this type often show up in near-death scenarios.

Also known as the Golden Ratio, its ubiquity and astounding functionality in nature suggests it importance as a fundamental characteristic of the Universe. The Fibonacci sequence starts like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, and so on forever. Each number is the sum of the two numbers that precede it.
