New EPA pesticide safeguard rules could impact farm, forest, greenhouse workers

Owners of farms, forests, nurseries and greenhouses that use pesticides in agricultural plant production will have to implement additional safeguards for their pesticide handlers and agricultural workers under a revision to the Worker Protection Standard.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published the new rules in the Federal Register Nov. 2. Compliance with most of the new rules will be required by January 2017, said Mary Ann Rose, program director for Ohio State University Extension’s Pesticide Safety Education ProgramRead more...

Dr. Timothy Roddam
The East Texas Longhorn Association lost one of it's stalwart members this past week...Dr Timothy Roddam and his wife, Debra, passed away.  A joint service will be held Saturday at 11am at the New Life Worship Center, 18535 Highway 69, Tyler Texas.  Dr Tim was very active with the ETLA, serving as Youth advisor, member of the Board of Directors, Reporter for the Trails and as a past Secretary.  For the past several years he has been the announcer for the East Texas State Fair, Longhorn Division.  He loved his Longhorns and was a true ambassador for the breed.  His sweet smile and willing spirit will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Our sympathies and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

Private Herd Numbers Often Misunderstood

The importance of establishing a private herd number for each of your individual animals is often misunderstood. Many people think that the TLBAA office is responsible for assigning the number, but that is not the case. The Private Herd number is your own personal identification system to assist you in keeping track of each individual animal's records.
Any system can be used. A common practice is a three numeral system. the first number is usually the last numeral of the current year (example 5 for 2015). The next two numbers are usually in sequence of the arrival of the offspring. For example, the first calf born in the year 2015 could be numbered 501 and the second calf born in the year 2015 could be numbered 502, and so on.
Also, with a simple odd/even numbering modification; a breeder can add more information to his private herd numbering system. A common method utilizing this modification is the practice of assigning bull calves odd numbers and giving heifers event numbers.
According to Section 2 of the TLBAA handbook of Rules and Regulations, the number must be branded on the animal, along with the breeder's holding brand, before application can be submitted for registration. The private herd number is the animal's permanent number and cannot be changed. A breeder cannot duplicate the same number on two different animals within the same herd.
Anyone with questions concerning the private herd numbering system should contact Rick or Dana at 817-625-6241 for assistance.
