FALL 2015 FUNDRAISER

Attention neighbors! MHNA’s annual fundraising letter will be arriving in your mailbox next week. We hope you’ll take a moment to read about our past year’s accomplishments and send us a contribution to continue our work. Along with the letter is our annual postcard – this time featuring 11 works of art that were inspired by our neighborhood. Remember your donation is tax-deductible. You can donate online at our website or by mailing a check. Thank you for your support.

DEVELOPMENT SITE @
WASHBURN-McREAVY (200 Central Ave)

MHNA's Land Use Committee has been very busy reviewing development plans. There has been great interest in the Atalus residential building proposed at 200 Central Ave.

The Heritage Preservation Commission public hearing date of December 7, 2015 given at the last meeting for the Alatus project on the Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home site, was incorrect. We have been notified by Alatus that the actual date is December 15, 2015.

The time and location for the hearing is listed on the City of Minneapolis’ web site as 4:30 PM in Room 317, City Hall.

NEWS FROM MARCY OPEN SCHOOL

Great new changes to the Labyrinth!
The school has graded the sides of the labyrinth with new soil ready for planting, corrected the drainage at the entrance, installed all outstanding bricks orders, installed classroom sitting rocks, planted 100 plants and placed donated gigantic boulders we have as an anchor! There is still much to do but things are looking great and peaceful!

A reminder that the Marcy Path to Peace / Terry Labyrinth is an annual ongoing fundraiser and you can always buy a brick, rock, tree or just donate anytime. Find it online on the Marcy Open School website or contact the coordinator Jacqueline Dekker Travis jdekkertr@aol.com or MarcyLabyrinth@gmail.com.

Artist Statement: "The phone for me is a true communication art tool. Alexander Graham Bell and I share a birthday. He built the phone so his deaf relatives could communicate. Now over a hundred years later Steve Jobs did that for the world. You now hear words as I see them. We all share our 'points of view' across the world on our phones, pads, and computers. We WATCH each other see that WE are ONE beautiful (and not so) World. We now share Art about that. I communicate my marvelous world, with my vision phone."

NO PLASTIC BAGS!

Recycling guides have been distributed throughout Marcy-Holmes over the past couple of weeks. The city wants to remind residents that plastic bags should not be included in the big blue bins. The bags often get tangled on the spools that separate recyclable materials, effectively shutting down the machines.

For more information, please visit: www.minneapolismn.gov/solid-waste

Make sure your trees are healthy when winter arrives by taking action now!

MN DNR forestry recommends:

  • soak the soil around your tree weekly with water until the ground freezes to prevent the tree’s branch tips from drying out
  •  Wrap the trunk of young, thin-barked trees such as maple and honeylocust with commercial tree wrap or plastic tree guards to prevent frost cracks. Trunks can heat up in the sun and quickly freeze when temperatures drop, causing the bark to crack. Remove wrap or guard in the spring.
  • Remove tall grass around the tree’s trunk to discourage rodents from feeding on bark.
  • Rake and remove fallen leaves and needles to reduce fungal diseases that can infect new growth the following year.
  • Protect the roots of newly planted trees from freezing by spreading a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch around the tree’s trunk, keeping the mulch off the trunk.
  • Wrap burlap around small coniferous trees to protect the needles from drying out when exposed to the sun, wind and road salt spray.
  • Prune trees to remove multiple stems and weak branches that can fail during a heavy snow or ice storm. Contact a certified arborist for help or to answer questions.

For more infomation, visit the DNR’s Tree Planting and Care Web page at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/treecare/caring-pruning.html

As the outreach arm of the Bee Lab, the Bee Squad communicates the latest bee research to audiences that are passionate about helping bees.

Minneapolis Historical Mobile Tour Smartphone App Now Available

The Minneapolis Historical Mobile Tour app is now available--for free!--for iPhones and Androids. There are two tours so far: The Old Highland tour (created in partnership with the Old Highland Neighborhood Association) and the Marcy-Holmes tour (created with the Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association). The app offers users an on-the-go look into Minneapolis's past, from the well-known headlines to the forgotten tales and people. Learn more and download it now at www.minneapolishistorical.org.

The Marcy-Holmes tour tells stories of the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood—what was once the town of Saint Anthony Falls—from 1849 through the early twentieth century, using images, text and recorded commentary from 27 neighbors and friends. Created using material drawn from Penny Petersen’s book, Hiding in Plain Sight: Minneapolis’ First Neighborhood, the tour focuses on 24 historical sights depicted in the bronze sculptures on the Sixth Avenue Stroll, an outdoor gallery created by artist Aldo Moroni in 2004 that extends from University Ave SE to Main Street. Each stop on the tour consists of a present day image of the site, the corresponding bronze sculpture, an historic image (when available), brief text and two audio recordings by an individual somehow related to the site.
