What is NIA?

The JCC Sports & Fitness center offers over 50 group exercise classes a week. If you are new to the JCC you might question which classes would keep your interest and fascination up. They are all energizing classes but this month we will focus on NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action).

NIA is a low impact, body-mind-spirit program incorporating cardiovascular fitness through kinesthetic dance movement patterns. NIA blends Eastern and Western movements including Yoga, martial arts, dance and Tai Chi. NIA is usually done barefoot and it stimulates your body and mind beginning with the 7,000 nerve endings in the soles of the feet. Soft-soled athletic shoes can also be worn if you prefer.

NIA fitness classes use 52 basic moves that lubricate joints, strengthen and stretch muscles while promoting stability, flexibility and agility. The movement patterns are joyful and playful. The workout is personalized for your body and the instructor will show various modifications for the movements. Start easy and build your intensity gradually.

"NIA barefoot cardio dance is more than a workout,” says Elaine Wolf, one of the JCC’s certified NIA instructors. “NIA is fitness set to empowering music that feeds your body, focuses your mind, stirs your emotions and uplifts your spirit—all this in a beautiful setting where everybody is welcome.”

Wear cool, loose fitting clothing or anything that makes you feel comfortable and allows freedom of movement. Be gentle and patient and allow yourself to move freely to experience the euphoria of NIA!

In golf, the most important (and often overlooked) piece of equipment is your body. Today, more and more pro and amateur golfers are turning to TRX to ensure that their bodies are one tool that won’t crack under pressure.

Golf depends on rotation to deliver power from the ground, through the core, and to the ball.TRX training builds stability in the lower spine while working to optimize mobility and power in the hips and upper spine, making your swing unyielding and smooth.

Benefits of TRX golf training:

  • Builds rotational strength for a more effortless swing.
  • Increases flexibility and mobility for greater range of motion.
  • Improves endurance to keep you strong until the 19th hole.
  • Helps generate power from your core for a more consistent game.

So whether you are looking for one-on-one training, couples training or involving the whole foursome stop by and speak with us about scheduling your sport specific golf training program.

April 2016 will be here before you know it!
