ECS Coffee: Thursday November 12, 8:15 am in the Driscoll Library.  Join us to learn about the Enrichment and Challenge Support (ECS) program.  ECS is undergoing changes following a rigorous and year-long review.  Matthew Rosenthal, the new town-wide program coordinator, and Ellen Davidson, Driscoll’s ECS teacher, will address questions such as - What does a new and reformed ECS look like?  How can it benefit your child? How can parents engage?  Contact Lisa.Serafin@redgate-re.com or Aguseva@bu.edu with any questions.  Hope to see you there!
NEXT WEEK: A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens and Tweens: An evening with author, speaker, and parenting expert Joani Geltman. Wednesday, November 18, 7:00-9:00 in the Driscoll School Theater. Second in a series from Brookline Talks, a new speaker series for parents. Sponsored by Brookline K-8 PTOs, the Brookline Education Foundation & the Brookline Community Mental Health Center.
Understanding our Differences: All grade 4 students participate in workshop called "Understanding Our Differences and Similarities".  It was a fantastic experience for the students, teachers and parents, and we are seeking more parents to volunteer for the remaining three workshops.  This week: 11/13/15, we will focus on the spectrum of hearing.  November 19 will explore physical challenges, and the final workshop on 12/4 will examine intellectual challenges. There is no prior knowledge or experience required, and the time commitment is only about 2 hours.  If you can help, please contact Kim Katz at kim_ktz@yahoo.com.  Thank you so much!

BROOKLINE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TEACHER CONTRACT UPDATE:
Did you know Brookline teachers worked on an extended one year contract last year and are working without a contract this year?  Teachers and those who support the will be attending the Town Meeting on Tues. Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Brookline High.
• Teachers are working without a contract. They had a one year agreement that expired on August 31st of this year. It followed a 3-year agreement that expired on August 31st, 2014. They agreed to the one year agreement, which contained 2%-3% raises halfway through the year, while they continued to bargain last year and over the summer. They have not reached an agreement for a new contract and continue to bargain.
• The teachers' chief objective was to get some relief from the vastly increasing workload by limiting tasks that take time away from teaching and planning for instruction. They'd like to ensure that all teachers have adequate preparation periods.
• They'd also like a reasonable raise to help keep pace with inflation.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

-Eleanor Roosevelt

Thank you all for coming to K-2 Community Meeting!  It is so exciting to come together to celebrate our youngest students as they share their learning, classroom news and practice making presentations to a large audience.   We love ending our meeting with the amazing Driscoll School Song.  Our eighth graders and teachers have returned from life at Farm School and we have so enjoyed all of  their stories.  We appreciate the work of many who made this learning experience happen.

We continue to implement our new Literacy Collaborative framework in Grades 3-8!

Over the last couple of months, our dedicated grade 3-8 teachers have been reflecting and collaborating on there literacy instruction. In trainings, teachers learned about the Literacy Collaborative framework for teaching in the reading and writing workshop, and how guided reading works to engage students around texts while lifting up their attention to reading strategies and skills. The benchmark assessment is being used across classrooms and results are being analyzed in preparation for guided reading groups, conferencing, and whole class instruction. It’s exciting to watch our students identify as “readers” and develop new understandings, embracing the concept that “reading is thinking.” Please help support your students at home as they try to navigate their literacy learning.

Homework Club for Grades 3-5 begins this week on November 9, 2015 in Room 220.

Lastly, we continue to be amazed a the capacity of the Driscoll Community.  The extrordinary sense of teaming and the exemplary professional community here is built on collaboration, high expectations, and caring, qualities so necessary to support our students to achieve their very best.  We are thank you for your involvement and support.

Best regards,
David and Eileen
