Ottawa area events for families and kids

This weekend, it's time to welcome Santa with a few big parades; plus a couple of lovely shows at Centrepointe to put you in the holiday mood.

Tuesday, November 17 is Sports Day In Canada, and there's events all week long to celebrate. If you check their website here, filtered for Ottawa, you'll see several local gyms and sports clubs having events where you can come and play as a family, or try out a new sport like football or speed skating. Friday, November 20 is Jersey Day, so if you're already a sports nut, show your love for your favourite team by wearing your best jersey.
Anne of Green Gables - the Musical comes to Centrepointe Theatre this week, starting Friday, November 20 and running through Sunday, November 29. It's put on by local troop Orpheus Theatre, so it's a great chance to see a good show and support local arts. Tickets range in price from $15 to $45 and there are matinees on the two Sundays.
Also at Centrepointe this week, Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre brings back their holiday favourite, The Story of Holly and Ivy, running between Thursday, November 19 and Monday, November 23. It's a lovely show, running for about an hour with no break, and recommended for kids aged 4-10. Tickets are just $32 for a family of 4 (or $10 each) and there are lots of matinees on both weekend days.
Who's ready to greet Santa? The biggest parade in town - the Help Santa Toy Parade - is this Saturday, November 21 at 11 a.m. in the downtown core. Firefighters along the route will be collecting new, unwrapped toys and cash donations to help toy mountain. The parade starts at Wellington and Bay (near the Garden of the Provinces) and heads east to Bank, then goes south on Bank to Laurier, then east on Laurier to Elgin.
You might already know that some Cineplex locations (the big one that used to be called the Coliseum (NOW AND FOREVER), and Silver City in Gloucester) feature older Family Movies on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. for just $2.99 per person. This Saturday, November 21 marks the start of their Christmas season with a showing of Home Alone. Upcoming weeks will show Arthur Christmas (love that movie), the Polar Express, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas - see their website for the full schedule.
The Barrhaven Santa Claus Parade is also this weekend, on Sunday, November 22, at 5:30 p.m. It starts at the corner of Strandherd and Beatrice, and runs down Strandherd until it hits the Park 'n' Ride. Non-perishable food and cash will be collected along the route for the Food Bank. Ho ho ho!
Speaking of all things Christmas and Santa, just wanted to mention that Bayshore Mall, Place D'Orleans, Carlingwood, and Hazeldean Mall now have Santa-in-Residence - check their websites (or better, their Facebook pages) for full schedules.
Ottawa Pop Expo is back this weekend, on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22, at the EY Centre. Best for tweens and teens that are into sci-fi, you'll find guests from shows like Agents of SHIELD, Star Wars, Smallville, and Star Trek: Voyageur, plus an appearance by Dan Parent, who makes my daughter's beloved Archie Comics.

PLUS, in HUGE news, William Shatner HIMSELF will be making a special appearance on Friday, November 20, at a single special event. I believe tickets to that are separate.

Kids 12 and under get in free to weekend events; ticketing is a complex process involving passes or multi-day or single day, so see their website for details.
