Tour De Farm

Slow Food First Coast is hosting their fourth annual Tour de Farm. The event will provide the community with an in-depth look at the fall harvest season in Northeast Florida and an opportunity to meet the individuals who enrich our local food system.
At Rype and Readi Farm there will be music by the Crawford Boyd Band, chef demonstrations by Collage and Blackfly, and a walking tour of the farm.

For more information visit them on Facebook or at slowfoodfirstcoast.com

We have organic Delicata squash at the farm market right now. These are winter squashes that are smaller and milder then others. It has a thinner skin so there is no need to peel it before cooking. It is a great source of beta carotene which is great for vision, skin, and immune system health.

We have some beautiful local Black and Watermelon radishes in.The Black radish has a rough black skin with a spicy flesh. While it can be eaten raw, it gets a sweeter taste when cooked and can be prepared like turnips or rutabagas.
The Watermelon radish's flesh is white and its flavor is mild, and only slightly peppery.

We have gift baskets that are great for the holidays or just as a treat for someone who deserves it! Suprise your healthy eater, culinary nut, or local food supporter. We fill our baskets brimming with honey, Himalayan sea salt, candied pecans, bee pollen and much more.
First Coast Slow Foods
We have a lot of events with the First Coast Slow Foods organization this week, so let's get to know them a little better. They are a non profit 501(c)(3) that was created to counteract fast-food culture. They are dedicated to preserving food traditions and believe in the importance of knowing where food comes from. Their goal is to support local healthy food development. We were honored with their Snail of Approval award earlier this year. We were given the award because we met their standards for good, clean, and fair food.

Community Development
If you've been out to the farm this past week you might have noticed some new additions to the farm market. We are undergoing renovations and planning an expansion. There will be a new room that will be dedicated to fresh meats and seafood. With more room we will be able to offer more produce, meats, and culinary treats.

 Local Farm Lore
Jon from the Middleburg area wanted to share that sheep have very good memories. They can remember at least 50 individual sheep and people for years.
They also display emotions by the positions of their ears.

Send us an email with your local farm lore and we might feature it in next weeks newsletter!
