SME Event - ITAC Partnership Program
ITAC’s Partnership Program aims to provide opportunities for networking and potential partnerships between young IT companies and established ICT firms. The October event brought together an engaging panel (pic left to right): Peter Kriparos, Regional Strategic Alliances Manager, Hitachi Data Systems; Francois Bouffard, Industry Affairs Director Canada, Dassault Systems Canada; Jason Brommet, Director, Partner Business & Development, Microsoft Canada and host for the event, Michael Lapalme, Director, Product Management, Bell Business Markets.
The open discussion highlighted that many small-to-medium sized IT businesses offer something that the big ICT firms are looking to include in their business mix rather than doing it themselves. Through a partnership or contract, SMEs can get exposed to another set of customers and have access to the bigger enterprise market.
Overall the feedback from the panel was the technology is changing so fast, there is disruption in the channel and no one is exactly sure where things are going. Business models are rapidly changing and at all levels, companies are reinventing productivity and business processes. Small-to-medium businesses need to innovate to unlock opportunities with technology partners. The established ICT firms are looking for outcomes and they want to work together with partners that can deliver.

IP Strategies for SMEs …First in a Series of Fireside Chats
Intellectual Property is an important corporate asset but it is a contentious one. Andrew Currier from Perry + Currier is a recognized leader in IP and provided a framework for helping business executives understand the IP system from the lens of business and provide practical approaches to determining what is worth protecting and how.
His presentation educated the group on the differences between trade secrets, patents, industrial design, copyright and trademarks. He also provided insight into where and when to submit for protection at different stages of business growth. Andrew also commented that Canada has incredible start-ups but we need to encourage them to support manufacturing at home.
A major piece of advice was for all companies to keep good housekeeping of records. It is important that a company is able to provide a paper trail when defending intellectual property.
Andrew’s recommended reading for anyone interested on the topic is No Ordinary Disruption by Richard Dobbs. To review Andrew Currier’s presentation click here
