Synopsis

Acquire skills in reading aloud in an engaging manner so as to obtain and hold audience attention. This workshop will cover all areas of reading aloud either to children or to adults, including vocal tone, clarity, pausing, emphasis, rhythm and shaping a spoken piece.  Create a  performance checklist, assess your individual performance and receive constructive peer feedback and practice. Bring your favourite reading material to read aloud too!

Synopsis

This workshop is for you if you are a beginner storyteller who has started telling stories to audiences of various ages. In this hands-on workshop for adults, you will become aware of your innate skills as storytellers and understand the process of using imagery to tell a story to an audience, without reading from a text. Learn about aspects of story structure such as character/s, goal , motive, punchline etc; select and memorise stories, use imagery to guide your telling and learn to be aware of your body and voice while telling.

Synopsis

Acquire writing techniques used by modern poetry stalwarts such as Ezra Pound, Maya Angelou, S Eliot, and Ted Hughes. Literary techniques would include looking at the poets' choice of imagery, development of plot, use of poetic diction and stanzaic form which lend structure and contribute to the mood of the piece. There will be a practical session of writing contemporary poetry with critique and reflection on the experience.
 

Dr George Jacobs was a Language Specialist at RELC for eight years and is the co-author of Read Aloud Asia, published by Times. He was a Language Specialist at RELC for eight years. Currently, he works with MOE Singapore and educational institutions around Singapore and internationally.

Synopsis

Dialogic reading highlights and emphasises the discussion that takes place between children and adults, as well as among children during reading. There are many benefits to be gained in dialogic reading such as increased fluency and development of grammatical and vocabulary. Acquire ideas on promoting dialogue through the use of appropriate prompting questions and group work in practicing reading aloud and sparking dialog.
