It is time, once again, for Batesville's White River Wonderland! The ice skating rink at Riverside Park will open on Nov. 28 and will remain open through Jan. 3. Don't forget the other holiday festivities like the Annual Lighting Ceremony in Downtown Batesville and the Kiwanis Christmas Parade on Monday, Nov. 30. The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The BACC will open on Monday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m.

The Humane Society of Independence County’s 20th Annual Christmas Portraits with Pets fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Once again, Matthew’s Photography will be taking the holiday Portraits at the old revenue office in the Town Plaza Shopping Center.

You are asked to make an appointment in advance for your session by calling (870) 613-3045 or (870) 698-1265. There is no sitting fee-just pay for the photo package you order; packages start at around $35. Photos may contain pets, kids, families or any combination of people and/or pets.

Christmas cards are available. These portraits make great gifts!

BATESVILLE MONTESSORI SCHOOL TO HOLD CHILI FUNDRAISER
 
Batesville Montessori School (BMS) will hold a Chili Fundraiser on Thursday, Dec. 3 at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Batesville from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Meals include homemade chili, chips, and a dessert. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased from BMS parents, at the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce, or at FUMC on the day of the event. Delivery is available for orders of 10 meals or more! For more information, call (870) 30-3551.

GENERAL SURGEON



Dr. Anthony M. Abraham
 
Gary L. Bebow, Administrator/CEO of White River Medical Center (WRMC), is pleased to welcome Dr. Anthony M. Abraham, General Surgeon, to the Medical Staff. Dr. Abraham is seeing patients at the WRMC Surgery Clinic, located at 413 Virginia Dr. in Batesville. Also practicing in the clinic is General Surgeon Dr. John Lambert.
 
General Surgeons are physicians who operate to repair injuries, correct deformities, prevent diseases, and generally improve the health of patients. They examine patients to determine if surgery is necessary and select the appropriate surgical procedure. Dr. Abraham’s expertise and interests include breast cancer surgery, thyroid surgery, and abdominal surgery using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Dr. Abraham also accepts referrals for screen colonoscopy and EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) used to detect colon cancer and illnesses of the gastrointestinal tract.
 
Dr. Abraham received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida. He completed his residency at Larkin Community Hospital, also in Florida, where he was named Chief Resident. During his time there, he also won several distinguished awards in Surgical Research.
 
“Dr. Abraham possesses great knowledge and experience in his skill,” said Bebow. “He collaborates well with our excellent team of Surgeons, and we are excited he is here.”
 
Dr. Abraham and his wife, Natalia, reside in Batesville, and are expecting their first child in January.
 
“I really enjoy practicing in Batesville,” said Dr. Abraham. “This is a wonderful community dedicated to its people, and my wife and I are thrilled to be a part of it!”
 
He enjoys golf, outdoor biking, indoor spinning, and looks forward to hunting and fishing.

CARLEE'S HALLMARK TO HOST BOOK SIGNING

 
Sarah Shell Teague will be at Carlee's Hallmark Store on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10-11:30 a.m. to sign her collection of holiday essays, Have Yourself a Hamster Little Christmas. This book, written for grown-ups, features amusing stories of Christmas adventures and mishaps. Teague writes light-hearted, reflective tales, pointing out the humor when Christmas events and traditions don’t go as planned. From adopting Christmas kittens to divinity-preparation disasters to getting lost snowmobiling in the Grand Teton Mountains to ringing the Salvation Army Christmas bell, Teague’s stories offer a moment’s solace during the busy holiday season.

Teague graduated summa cum laude from Ouachita University with a B.A. in English and French. She earned her M.A. at ASU, her PhD in English at the University of Mississippi, and completed postgraduate work in Creative Writing at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario.  She has published several stories and essays in literary journals and newspapers.  She currently serves as associate editor for El Dorado Insider’s Guide and Cloud 9 magazines. She has taught Composition at SouthArk Community College as well as facilitating reading groups there and through Barton Library.  Teague serves on the El Dorado Boys and Girls Club Board and is Past President of Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries (www.abchomes.org), which will receive a portion of the profits from Have Yourself a Hamster Little Christmas.

In addition, Teague served on the Development Board of Ouachita University. She is a Service League Associate and a Protestant. She and her husband are patrons of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, South Arkansas Arts Center, South Arkansas Symphony, and the South Arkansas Historical Preservation Society. A native of Walnut Ridge, Teague and her husband, Jeff, raised their three sons in El Dorado, where they have lived for 25 years.  Her parents are the late Frank and Carolyn Shell of Batesville, and she has numerous business interests in Batesville, where her oldest son, Justin, currently resides, Follow her blog, www.sarahshellteague.net, on Twitter #ShellTeague, or Instagram @sshellt.

LIBRARY HOLIDAY CLOSING
 
The Independence County Library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 29.  The Library will open Monday, Nov.30, at 9 a.m.
