AmeriCorps Spotlight: Concetta Modica

I first learned about the AmeriCorps year of service on my school’s career site. I was always interested in legal procedures and legal organizations, but I wanted to work in public service prior to getting involved in (hopefully) a legal career. My motivation for wanting to know more about law was the desire to help disadvantaged groups and to inform groups of laws/services that are available to help them. What attracted me to the year of service was the idea that I could learn more about groups I would like to help and build a foundation of public service. I thought that, by building outreach programs and being available to help those in need, I could really make an impact and learn more about disadvantaged groups in a hands-on way.” ~ Concetta

New York Cares Tax Preparation Program:
Join the New York Cares Tax Preparation Program and help over 14,000 low-income working New Yorkers file their income tax returns. As part of the tax team, you will learn how to file taxes for free and help to fight poverty through returning over $20 million in refunds to hard working New Yorkers. On average, New York Cares gives back returns that are over 10% of a client’s annual income!

All volunteers must complete the IRS online training and a one-day or two-evening comprehensive practice session. Once trained, you can sign up for a tax preparation site in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn. Volunteers commit to a weekly evening, daytime or weekend shift for the tax season. Click here to sign up. Each year the need for this service continues to increase across our City. New Yorkers are counting on you!

Message from the Chief Service Officer

“The holidays are the perfect time of the year to think about how you have helped others over the past 12 months and how you can continue to give back. I would like to give thanks to those who volunteer across our great City. Volunteers help to meet the City’s greatest needs throughout the five boroughs, and make a special impact on the lives of others by creating stronger and better connected communities. You have the ability to give something that is truly wonderful; donate your time and effort to improving the lives of others. Volunteering. Good for you. Good for your City."
