Give back this holiday season
through #GivingTuesdayCA

We are proud to be a partner organization in â€ª#GivingTuesdayCA, a collective day of giving that is taking place on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. It's a day to give back by volunteering, donating to your favourite charities and helping those in need.

At Child Development Institute, we work with families to help stop the damaging cycle of violence, build positive parent-child relationships and rebuild and strengthen families.

We're focusing our Giving Tuesday campaign on Mothers in Mind, a group program for mothers who have experienced woman abuse or other trauma and have children under the age of four.

While we accept donations for Mothers in Mind every day of the year, we hope #GivingTuesdayCA will be a special time where we can make a significant impact in the lives of the mothers and children in this program.

Through your support, we can end the cycle of violence and transform the lives of Toronto’s most vulnerable families.

QUICK FACTS

  • Mothers in Mind is a group program for mothers who have experienced woman abuse or other trauma (e.g. childhood abuse, sexual assault, war) and have children under the age of four.
  • The program focuses on the needs of mothers who find that these hurtful experiences are making parenting difficult.
  • The 10-week mother-child group helps mothers learn ways to manage stress and other challenging feelings, foster healthy self-esteem, and respond to their children in a sensitive, supportive and effective manner.
  • CDI supported 90 families in 2015 through Mothers in Mind group programming.
  • The program has expanded to 25 licenced sites across Ontario.
  • Mothers in Mind supports women with young children in becoming the mothers they want to be.

We are grateful to the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada (WICC) for their generous investment in children and women this past year through CDI’s Family Violence programs.

Founded by women in 1918—the same year Canadian women won the right to vote—the WICC supports projects that address social justice issues, help women and children and lead to a better future for communities in need.

“Each year, we receive hundreds of grant applications for projects in every corner of the world,” says Kathryn Tate, WICC’s communications coordinator. “What caught our attention about CDI’s proposal was the carefully coordinated programming in support of women—and their children—who are trying to navigate the transition out of violent homes.”

Funding from the WICC has supported Transitions, a drop-in group program that supports women and children who have experienced family violence or other trauma, and are currently in crisis or transition. At some sites, Transitions now also includes Taste of Home programming, CDI’s after-school cooking group that helps children who have experienced family violence learn how to better manage the stresses of everyday life while preparing healthy, budget-friendly meals.

â€œThis project fills a gap in services for women: the program’s design is respectful towards the women and their individual paths,” Kathryn says. “Incorporating emotional support with teaching children food skills in a safe space to literally and figuratively fortify them is innovative. WICC is thankful for the opportunity to contribute.”

Take the pledge to #EndViolence

November 25 marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. This international campaign makes the critical link between violence against women and human rights.

The 16 day period links two significant dates: November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10th, International Human Rights Day

Status of Women Canada is using these 16 Days of Activism to remind Canadians that they can take actions, now and throughout the year, to eliminate violence against women and girls in all its forms.

Take the pledge to #EndViolence.
