MARCUSE SOCIETY
2015 Conference
at Salisbury University

Praxis and Critique:
Liberation, Pedagogy, and the University

For this successful conference, the Marcuse Society is most appreciative of the many contributions by Dr. Robert Kirsch (Arizona State University) and the faculty, staff, and students of Salisbury University (SU).
Special thanks to the on-site conference organizer,
Dr. Sarah Surak, Salisbury University.

Here is a preliminary recap prepared by Dr. Sarah Surak:
A few conference event highlights:
  • 110 people attended the opening keynote "New Sensibilities, New Universities: Higher Education, Utopian Energies, and the Prospects for Liberation" by Dr. Steven Dandaneau, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies at Kansas State, on Thursday evening. The event was free and open to the public.
  • Sixty-two academic papers were presented in five concurrent sessions. More than 150 people (including conference participants and SU faculty, staff and students) attended these sessions over the course of two days.
  • Conference participants included a large contingent from institutions across the US as well as from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, the UK, Korea, Germany, and Canada.
  • A new book of previously unpublished lectures delivered by Herbert Marcuse in 1974 was published in conjunction with the conference. This book highlights the SU conference efforts.
Of those attending conference events, approximately 1/3 were graduate and undergraduate students
  • Six SU undergraduate students presented papers, two in regular sessions and four in an undergraduate session.
  • Four classes incorporated some aspect of the conference into their course material.
  • Students from POSC 399/HONR 311 interviewed participants, participated in workshops, and assisted with conference logistics.
The Salisbury University gallery featured the works of three artists and the results of a student workshop including SU students.

And the work continues:

New Political Science (Journal of the Caucus for a New Political Science, affiliated with the American Political Science Association) and SPECTRA  (graduate Student Journal located at Virginia Tech) will coordinate special issues on the conference themes ... to appear next year.
