Community Update

Anna Russell, Community Director, Tri NZ

Triathlon season is well and truly underway with lots of events happening around the country.  After spending the last couple of weeks driving around meeting those involved in the sport, it has been great to now collate feedback and start to develop a clear value proposition for how Tri NZ can better support our communities.  I will keep you updated as this progresses.  One quick-win  has been to develop an online forum for triathlon clubs to share knowledge, information and ideas.

To keep up-do-date with all things happening in the Triathlon Community check out the TriBE Facebook page every Tuesday and Thursday for the Community Bulletins and Profiles.  Swifty, my bike and I will be out and about in the Community this summer (pictured below in New Plymouth), always keen to meet those who make this sport so fantastic, so please get in touch!

Who is Elise Salt?

This edition we introduce Elise Salt, she's described as unassuming, disciplined and (mostly) organised.  As well as competing on the World Stage, Elise is busy studying for a degree in engineering.  She answers some of your questions below:

Scottie T Photography

1) What do you love about triathlon?

I love pretty much everything about triathlon.  Training, racing, the triathlon community, all the fancy and expensive gear, and the friends I've made from doing the sport.  For me the best thing about triathlon is the satisfaction I get after a hard session or race.

2) What is your favourite song to train to?

When it comes to music I'm pretty unoriginal with what I listen to and don't actually tend to listen to music when I train unless I am windtraining.  In saying that a good pump up song for me is Encore Numb Remix by Jay-Z and Linkin Park.

3) Who is your biggest motivation/role model in the sport?

I have a few role models in the sport.  I have utter respect for Andrea Hewitt who has performed consistently on the WTS circuit for the past decade.  Being a competitive person I also get motivation from my competitors, they help me to dig that little bit deeper in sessions.

4) Where can we find you this summer?

This summer I'll be in Cambridge training with the HP squad.  Hopefully I'll be ready to race at Oceania's in March, but regardless I will be at as many Tri races as I can to support.

Next edition we profile Nicole van der Kaay.  Have something you want to ask one of our Elite Athletes - click here!

Coaching tip of the month: Open water swim tips

Ben Eitelberg has multiple-years experience coaching. His approach is simple – structure, balance, technique and a little luck. Ben continues to achieve success with both beginners and the seasoned athletes, tailoring his approach to each individual.

For most that are new to the sport of triathlon, swimming can at times be likened to being caught in the middle of a feeding frenzy of hungry sharks - it causes needless anxiety for most, which can be a scary experience.  However, it doesn't have to be, here are a few tips to make your open water experience safer, more enjoyable, and contribute to you achieving a better result:

1) Before the event:
  • Know your wetsuit - ensure you have swum in it before, that it fits, and remember the anti-chafe spray/cream!
  • Bag of spares - have a second pair of goggles just in case and carry a neoprene swim cap for those cold water days
2) Race day
  • Prepare - before entering the water perform a basic warm up with dynamic stretches, then warm up in the water by swimming to the first buoy, ensure water goes in your wetsuit to get better wetsuit fit
  • Remember to breathe - stay calm, relax your breathing and slowly exhale out the mouth
  • Pick your line - place yourself on the outside of pack so you have clear water, sighting is key to stay on course, if you can get on someones feet!
  • Make your exit slick - keep swimming until you touch the bottom with your hands, then dolphin dive, on exit put goggles on head and unzip wetsuit, pulling down so it is low on hips, then remove cap and goggles entirely
Ben and the Fitness Locker team are at most events throughout the summer so feel free to approach them for some additional tips/advice, or contact Ben here.
