Circus Daoyin

Conditioning Emptiness: Where Martial Arts Meets Spontaneous Luminosity. This traditional Chinese “yoga” conditions the habits of freedom through play.  It is spontaneity driven; yoga with a muse.  A big hit with the Asian Bodywork community in Chicago, specifically because it zeros in on how health practitioners can use self-cultivation to get better healing outcomes.  We will use twenty animals, each with five elements in continuous expression and transition. This form of movement “opera” comes from the animal stage-roles of Southern China (via Paulie Zink, the inventor of Yin yoga). The downward dog pose scampers about the room and wiggles his tail, the frog eats flies and accidentally lands on a hot brick.

The design of this class is open ended, and aimed at giving people new ways of experiencing their bodies in movement.  It doesn't have a beginning and it doesn't have an end, wherever you are you can just jump right in!

Dance As Self-Defense

Dance As Self-Defense is my new baby.  A completely new way of thinking about both martial arts and dance.  I've taken all the funnest stuff in martial arts and put it into dance games.  Think: A safe way to work with maximum momentum.  Stop struggling and start dancing!  Each game plays with principles of movement and perception.  We will learn the W.A.L.T.Z. (Warriors and Lovers Traditional Zeitgeist), and the S.A.M.B.A. (Situational Awareness Momentum-Balance Activation).

These dance styles are straight-up short-cuts to advanced martial arts skills.  One of the beautiful things about this method is it by-passes the normal emotional identity blocks people have, thereby giving students an opportunity to experience movement in new ways.  If you would like to learn martial arts through dance, this is a great entry point.  If you would like to bust your martial arts training out of its neat little boxes, this is the ticket.  Or, if you just want to have a whole bunch of fun, this is the class for you!
