Read the full report on the 2015 P&C Survey

West Australian P&C Associations in 2014 donated in excess of an estimated $15 million to schools in funds and resources. This figure is projected to increase for 2015, according to survey results collated through WACSSO's inaugural School Community Contributions and Funding Survey, which heard from 118 P&Cs in June on a range of P&C and school related issues.

The full survey report, with P&C and school community donations data, volunteer hours and a range of other P&C and school operational related information is HERE.

Safe Schools Coalition Australia has finally reached WA!

Safe Schools Coalition Australia (SSCA) provides free, voluntary and tailored support to schools to build their capacity to support same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families and to create safer and more inclusive environments for their whole school community.

SSCA is federally funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training and nationally convened by the Foundations of Young Australians (FYA).SSCA supports government, independent and faith-based schools from metropolitan, regional and remote areas.

Support is tailored to the needs of each school. SSCA can provide staff training in diversity, resources, tailored support and advice, support to student led activities and support to students affirming their gender at school.

Schools can become a member school for free and being a member school is a statement, a commitment to making school safer for every student, staff member and family.

How could secondary supply laws affect your family?

Secondary supply of alcohol laws are now in place, making it an offence to supply alcohol to anyone under 18, without the consent of the juvenile’s parent or guardian. The penalty is $10,000.

How could this affect your family?

The Department of Racing Gaming and Liquor has released a comprehensive FAQ on the subject. Read it HERE.

FAQ

Q: Can P&C money be used to fund P&C social functions, gifts or staff farewells?

A: WACSSO supports the legal stance that P&C money should not be used to fund social functions for P&C members, gifts or staff farewells. The P&C is governed by the rules of the Associations Incorporation Act 1987 which states that "The property and income of the association shall be applied solely towards the promotion of the objects or purposes of the association and no part of that property or income may be paid or otherwise distributed, directly or indirectly, to members of the association, except in good faith in the promotion of those objects or purposes".

The School Education Act 1999 states that "An association is not to expend its funds that are in excess of administrative costs otherwise than for the benefit of students at a government school".

To overcome this issue the P&C could hold a special fundraiser, clearly advertising the purpose (e.g. the purchase of the occasional bereavement card, farewell flowers, plaque, gift, thank you barbecue etc.) All decisions to spend this specially raised money would require a correctly ratified motion passed at a General Meeting. Any purchases must be listed in the Treasurers reconciliation presented to the general members for accountability.

Congratulations to 2015 Critics’ Choice winner – Denmark Senior High School

More than 31 local and regional schools took part in the competition which was launched on the 31st of May – ‘World No Tobacco Day’.

Critics’ Choice is part of a strategy to reduce the prevalence of tobacco smoking among young people.

The competition ran in schools nation-wide and encouraged upper primary and lower secondary students to watch, rate and discuss anti-smoking television advertisements from around the world and vote on the one most likely to prevent them from taking up smoking or encourage them to stop.

This year over 31 schools participated in the 2015 Critics’ Choice and in Western Australia we received more than 664 student votes. The most popular Ad was “Terrie’s Ad: Teenage Regret” produced by Centres for Disease Control and Prevention with an overwhelming 47% of the total votes.

The Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) and the Smarter than Smoking project would like to thank all schools that participated in Critics’ Choice 2015 and voted on their favourite ad. The winning school, Denmark SHS was drawn at random from the pool of entries and will receive a $500 voucher.

The Smarter than Smoking project website features school and community resources to educate and support teachers, parents and young people about tobacco use and smoking related issues.

WACSSO Q&A -  Sam Hardcastle

Sam has two children aged 14 and 10, a crazy amount of sporting commitments and volunteer roles, including fundraising and events co-ordinator on the East Victoria Park Primary School P&C. She has lots of pets and sometimes has time to go to work! ( and loves exclamation marks!) Sam is also WACSSO's hardworking casual administration assistant.

Describe yourself in three words – Smart, strong, organised
What is your favourite school memory? Working really hard and being accepted into the course I wanted at uni.
What was your favourite school subject? English
As a child, what did you want to ‘be when you grew up?’ A  journalist. Which I did for 7 years,  then competing interests and passions led me work as a stage manager, a child health nurse, a drama teacher, and a parent. And still more avenues to explore!
Why do you think education is important? It opens minds and opens doors. It can be full of questions, imagination and opportunities to explore ideas and feelings. It never stops.
What is the best part about being involved with P&C? Building a sense of community in the school, friendships with other families, getting to know the staff, knowing we are supporting the school.
What does parental engagement mean to you? Being actively interested and involved in all of school life: academic, sporting, social.
What piece of advice would you give to your 10 year-old self? Be more friendly and less conscientious!
Tell us a joke! Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7, 8, 9!
