Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing presents certificates and prizes to Epping St John's students

Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing presented the prizes at Epping St John's School's GCSE presentation evening.

Mrs Laing said the event was a celebration of the progress the school has made in recent years.

Newly-retired headteacher George Yerosimou returned for the evening to celebrate with the students who had achieved excellent results in their GCSEs. They all paid tribute to him and thanked him for his leadership throughout their education.

Mrs Laing said: "Sadly the loss of school governor Mike Rigelsford was keenly felt. He did so much for St John's and it was poignant that his funeral was to be held the following day."

Mrs Laing highlighted that she had first presented a GCSE certificate to Ben Murphy, 15 years ago - and now he is Chairman of Governors at the school.

"A great example to all students at St. John's," she said.

Mrs Laing added: "I was delighted to present the certificates and prizes to the students at Epping St John's and to celebrate with them their great results.

"They have done very well and I am proud of their achievements and of their plans for the future.

"It is great to see the new school building in full operation - what a great place to work and to study.

"I am also very pleased to see that so many students are staying at Epping St John's for the Sixth Form. I know they will do well."

Chairman of Governors Ben Murphy said: "Awards evenings are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the progress and achievement of students following a sustained period of hard work and dedication to their studies.

"This year I was particularly moved to hear the personal stories of so many students who overcame personal challenges to achieve the outcomes they desired."

He added: "Eleanor Laing is an old friend of Epping St. John's School and we are grateful that she so regularly takes the time to visit.

"Mrs Laing eloquently explained that a good education gives us all keys to open doors to the future. She also celebrated the fact that so many students who would have left the school after their GCSE exams had the opportunity this year to say on in our Sixth Form.

"We wish all of those students who have now left the school the very best of luck for the future and hope they do themselves and their school proud."
