President's Letter
Ladies,

As Events Co-Chair Duffy Kopriva and I were laying out name-tags for the Annual Meeting, she said “There are so many names I don’t recognize. It’s really great!” I told her that one of the things I like the most about WGA is that everyone seems to have that attitude—the more the merrier, we’re delighted to meet you, and we really think you’d get a lot out of joining us. In fact, we had more than 70 guests at the Annual Meeting, and 258 attendees overall—our largest gathering yet.

I have a few more pretty exciting numbers to share in case you weren’t able to get to the luncheon. We end 2015 with 365 members, including 72 new members, an endowment of over $2.5 Million, and 40 Legacy members. At the Annual Meeting, the members present ratified grant recommendations totaling $395,000. These five grants bring our total granted since inception to just a little over $4.5 Million. You can read or download the grants brochure on our brand new beautiful website right here.

I hope you have had the chance to check out the website, which was a huge labor of love for a small group, including Susan Edelman and Joanne Cohen from The Community Foundation, and WGA members Kate Ligare and Dale Clifford, who led a wide range of volunteers. We are grateful to them for all of their work, and to those of you who helped fund this project.

You will receive your 2016 Calendar of Events in the mail after Thanksgiving. As you will see, the Education Chairs have lined up some really fascinating programs, and I hope to see you at one of them very soon!

Volunteers Needed to Evaluate 2016 Grant Proposals

At its heart, WGA is a membership organization.  This means that members collectively donate funds to improve the lives of women and girls in Northeast Florida -- and members ultimately determine which agencies will receive WGA Grant Pool dollars.  The Grants Decision Team is the group of volunteers entrusted to make the recommendations voted on every October at the Membership Annual Meeting.  And, yes, with another grant year beginning, new volunteers are needed to help evaluate the next cycle of proposals.
There are three distinct types of Grants Decision Team volunteers (right), all making their specialized contributions.  All team members must agree to adhere to a strict code of confidentiality and ethics regarding letters of interest, proposals and the decision-making process.  While there are a limited number of Core Team and Financial Team member positions, there are an unlimited number of Volunteer Readers.
Serving as a Volunteer Reader is a flexible way to join the Grants Team, learn about the grants process and the good work being done by many outstanding non-profits in our community!  Volunteer Readers work largely independently and are not required to attend any meetings except the first overall Grants Decision Team Organizational/Training meeting held January 15 (11 am - 1:30 pm) at The Community Foundation.  Participation as a Volunteer Reader is encouraged if this is your first introduction to grants or you are a new member of WGA.

Financial Committee members are required to attend the January 15 training session (above), as well as ad hoc sessions.

If you are interested in joining the Decision Core Team, additional mandatory meetings are scheduled for January 26, 2016 (11:00am – 2:00pm), April 11, 2016 (11:00am – 2:00pm), and June 6, 2016 (10:00am – 2:00pm).

To learn more about the Grants Decision Team process, visit "Our Grantmaking" page on the new WGA website.

If you are interested in joining the Grants Decision Team for 2016, please contact Julie Davis (juliabdavis77@gmail.com) by November 30, 2015.
There also are good opportunities to participate in Grants by serving on the Evaluation Team.  This group follows WGA’s grants after funding and observes first-hand the impact our grants are making on the lives of women and girls in Northeast Florida.  Please contact Lynn Bertram (lynn.bertram@gmail.com) if you are interested in joining this committee.

Delores Barr Weaver Fellows Yaima Coto and Angela Grewal met with Colleen Willoughby (center), a leader in the early collective women's giving movement and founder of the Washington Women's Fund in 1995.
Stephanie Cost, WGA Member and Coordinator of the Delores Barr Weaver Fellows Program, co-led the conference session "Fellows Programs: A Strategy for Membership Outreach" with the co-President of Impact 100 Philadelphia.

WGA 2nd Vice-President Dale Clifford and former WGA President Sandy Cook presented a case study "The Power of One to the Power of Many: The Women’s Giving Alliance’s Advocacy Journey."   In addition, TCF Vice-President of Philanthropic Services Joanne Cohen presented "Family Dynamics and Philanthropy: Tips for Talking to Your Family About Giving."
WCGN has a national conference every two years.  At the final session, it was announced that Jacksonville will host the 2017 WCGN Leadership Conference.  WGA First Vice-President Martha Baker (second from left), is the recipient of the passing baton while WGA President-Elect Ellen Wiss (second from right) collects the paperwork.  WGA's 2017 hosting effort will be co-chaired by current WGA President Paula Liang and Martha Baker.

Although local in focus, any member is welcome and encouraged to attend any Neighborhood Connector event – and to bring a friend!  Please RSVP to the Neighborhood Connectors listed below.
