Learning About Architecture Helps You Deliver

I'm reading a lot of books and websites to up my game as a developer. The result is that code from a year ago looks odd already. This is a good sign! Being discontent with old code is a natural result from getting better at your work. I'm proud to make progress and enhance my apps both at the interface level and in code.

Some of my longer articles from the past months seem to have a common theme: improving the status quo and questioning so-called best practice. Have a look at them and see what you could do differently in your next project, or your next feature release. Remember that discontent is a driver of change. Embrace change and become an even better developer!

To make the Word Counter better, I experiment with creating real Swift modules for new components. My hope is that components can be more easily re-used from different parts of the application (main app and helper app bundle) because the cohesion in a module is very high.

I still struggle with breaking the little menu bar helper app up into multiple parts. That's because I designed it as a monolith. I will certainly write more about Swift modules on my blog, but first I have to see if that approach really scales well.

So many great things happen in the community right now.

Make Money Outside the Mac App Store

E-Book Pre-Release

I strongly believe indie developers should consider selling their apps outside the Mac App Store. FastSpring is such a great service to do just that! Also, it pays off to build a real audience and stay in touch with customers – stuff Apple won't let us do.

I mentioned this book project in the last issue already. The manuscript is finished and I'm going to release it in the upcoming weeks.

Pre-order the book before Dec. 10th and save 55%!

I've written a lot about cool Swift stuff that can be improved even more. Here are my own favorites: Oh, and I struggled with Core Data. Again. And again. Although I solved the issue for now, suggestions are highly welcome.

Also, have a look at this from around the web:

So enjoy the rest of November and the beginning of holiday season! Happy thanksgiving for you folks from the U.S., too!
