Wobble then Gobble!
Thanksgiving is already upon us and with it, some annual events to help kick off your holiday with some exercise.
In Kona, Big Island Running Company hosts the 11th Annual Wobble Gobble on the Walua Trail (mauka of the Chevron station on Lako Street). These family-friendly runs start at 8:00 a.m., with distances of 1-mile, 3.5-miles, an 6.4-miles. There are no advance sign-ups, you just sign out when you're finished. The race is free, although we encourage people to bring canned goods for the Hawaii Island Food Basket. Keiki will receive medals and there will be giveaways for the rest of the participants. We could still use some volunteers for this event, so if you are interested, please contact Melissa at melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.
On the Hilo side of the island, runners and walkers can head to Coconut Island on Thanksgiving morning for the annual Wayne "Big Dog" Joseph Thanksgiving Day 5k hosted by Big Island Road Runners. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. from the Coconut Island Parking Lot and goes along Hilo Bayfront to a turnaround point and back. The route is essentially flat with one bridge rising. Canned goods and monetary donations are collected for the Salvation Army holiday food program.
Another popular event in Kona is Kiser Motorcycle's (Tri)tophan Turkey Day Triathlon at the Kailua Pier. This race is so popular that it fills up within hours! Even though you may not be able to race this year, spectators and volunteers are always welcome!
We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and is able to participate in one of these great events!

100% Pure Kona Coffee Half Marathon
Last Saturday, November 14, a new event came to Kona and exceeded all expectations! The 100% Pure Kona Coffee Half Marathon presented by Bioastin came together quickly in the fall and we didn't even get a chance to feature it in our newsletter. However, plenty of people managed to find out about it, as 170 people were able to finish the first-year event!
The race started at 6:30 a.m. at Coconut Grove Marketplace under slightly cloudy skies. With the southbound lane of Alii Drive closed, runners ran south to the End of the World and back, tackling some hills along the way. After crossing the finish line, runners were greeted with an appropriately themed medal - a coffee mug!
This year's race was won by Billy Barnett in a time of 1:17:13, while Kristin Old took the ladies' race in a time of 1:37:20. Full results are available on the race website: purekonahalf.com. Keep checking back there for information on how to get in on this event next year!
