A good way to find out more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

Good afternoon <<First Name>>,

Welcome to issue #10! We now have over 500 Twitter followers, and over 500 Facebook likes. Thank you all for your support! You are helping us to get plain language news and information about the NDIS out to the people that need it.

As always, there is plenty of NDIS news to catch up on. This issue we talk about the NDIS New World Conference (#ndisconf), all of the latest reports and documents the NDIS and the Federal Government have been working on, and we also take a look at the issues around closed-system housing, and how different people feel about it.

Next issue we plan to tell you about the activities of an important group of people with disability, carers and service providers - the NDIS Independent Advisory Council (IAC). They think and talk about things that are important to people using the NDIS, and then they tell the people in charge of the NDIS. The NDIS Board also asks the IAC for advice, and makes changes when the IAC gives them good ideas. For example, the IAC recently set up an Intellectual Disability Reference Group to help make sure the voices of people with intellectual disability were being heard now and in the future. The IAC are doing lots of important work and we'll tell you more about it next time. Until then, get to know the IAC members from the NDIS website.

We hope you find our website and eNews useful, helpful, and easy to use. We will always welcome your feedback

News from the NDIS New World Conference: Technology in the 21st Century

Disability housing institutions are beginning to close

Disability housing institutions are buildings where very large numbers of people with disability live together. People that live in institutions generally have a much lower quality of life than people that live in mainstream housing, but sometimes it is the only option. There have been a few stories in the news recently about some of these institutions closing, and new types of housing are being built before the NDIS rolls out. Different groups of people have different opinions about it.

What has the NDIS been up to in October and November?

Since October 22, the NDIS have released: an Assistive Technology Strategy; the NDIA 2014-15 Annual Report; NDIS Quarterly Report; the Joint Standing Committee's second report on the NDIS, and a proposed NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Framework.
