Deagon Ward E-News

November 2015

The last month has been another busy one for the Deagon Ward community. It was an honour to present awards to students at Bracken Ridge High and Sandgate High at both their Sports and Academic Awards night - including the Councillor Jared Cassidy Award for Academic Excellence.

I have also made a submission to the Shorncliffe Pier Project Team on behalf of the hundreds of locals who responded to my community survey. Thanks to Tackle Land Sandgate and Stirling Hinchliffe for collecting surveys also. This submission included feed back from you on what you wanted to see at the official opening. it also included the feedback on the questions I asked of you:

  1. Do you think the official opening of the Shorncliffe Pier should be a community day, organised by the community? 95.9% YES
  2. I would like the opening to include stalls from local businesses and community groups. 89.4% YES
  3. I would like to see live music at the Pier opening (including on the Pier) from local musicians. 95.35% YES
  4. The official opening should include the history of our Pier and of our local community. 96.8% YES

I have urged the Construction team to take this information on board and to allow the community the opportunity to have significant input into the organisation of the opening.

I am going to launch a new Planning & Development e-news service for local residents that you can sign up to by click here. This regular e-news will include details of recently lodged applications for development in the Deagon Ward so you can keep up to date with development in your suburb.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and keep an eye in your in letterboxes for my next free community BBQ.

To find out how you can get involved in my White Ribbon Day event on Sunday click here.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

Out and About in the Community

Recent community BBQs

Thanks to all the locals who have come along to my recent community BBQs at Shorncliffe, Taigum and Deagon. These community BBQs are a great opportunity to get out and about and talk to residents about the issues that are important to them. I have a few more suburbs left to visit before Christmas - so I hope to see you out and about.

Launch of Invictus College

I attended the launch of the brand new Invictus College which is to be located right in the heart of Sandgate. This College is a co-educational high school for young people to complete their education in a flexible learning environment that is socially and culturally inclusive.

The college mission is to empower young people to Conquer Adversity through Education by acknowledging that all students have unique attributes, qualities and strengths.

Invictus Community College offers Individualized & Modified Learning Programs that offer Academic & Vocational Pathways:
  • Queensland Certificate of Education
  • TAFE Pathways, School based Apprentiships & Traineeships
  • Work Readiness Programs
  • Learning Support

Thank you to Sunset Run Volunteers

Sponsors and volunteers that made Sandgate's Second Sunset Run came together recently to celebrate the fantastic success of this local event. Be Uplifed, a breast cancer charity was the beneficiary of the money raised on the night - around $5000 this year. This is a great result and is a real testament to the volunteers who make this event a reality - particularly Dean & Vanessa Gibson who have put in countless hours to this event and to Park Run each weekend.

Sandgate & Bracken Ridge High Awards Nights

Well done to all of the students at Sandgate and Bracken Ridge High. It's been a real honour to attend both the sports and academic awards nights for both of these schools and to award prizes to some outstanding students.

Students at these schools are achieving some amazing results in the academic field, in music and in athletics.

The academic achievement of the graduating class for 2015 has been showcased at both schools with dual dux awards at each.

Bhutanese Festival

I helped fund the recent Bhutanese Cultrual Festival held at the Sandgate PCYC. This emerging community right here on the northside has held this festival over the last few years. This is the second year the community themselves have organised the event. It was great to see hundreds of local residents come along to the PCYC to join in on the day and enjoy both the culture and the food.
