Omaha World-Herald's Barfknecht reviews a recent comment by Nebraska Chancellor Perlman, "If you look at most of the Power Five conferences, the industry practice is to keep coaches and athletic directors on five-year contracts. If you don’t do that, you seriously impact your ability to recruit." The part about ADs opened his eyes, so he reached out to a number of other players in the industry, two unnamed ADs said five-year deals were, "news to them," looked at the contracts for other 'Power 5' ADs & finds no evidence of a five-year deal for an AD aiding recruiting, also got comments from NACDA Executive Director Vecchione on the topic - link

Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette's Wurth & Hettinger attempt to provide some insight, Interim Chancellor Wilson has said she will hire a new AD, as opposed to waiting on a new permanent campus boss to do so next Spring, has not chosen a search firm yet & not sure of the timeline, but wants to start soon. Texas State gets a $1m gift from the Diepenhorst family, funds will be used to match other donations in the $25k to $100k range to increase the Bobcats scholarship endowment by $2m, in the last six years alone that pool of money has moved from $900k to $4.5m, Champions Club at Bobcat Stadium will now bear the Diepenhorst name, AD Teis, "In every athletics department long term sustainability and finding creative financing is critical to the success. Missed late in the week & important, 7'6" UCF freshman MBB student-athlete Fall ended up getting clearance from the NCAA & played 14 minutes for the Knights in their season-opener at Davidson on Saturday night, HC Jones, "We're just excited for him to play and appreciate his handling everything with great patience and just appreciate the NCAA looking at his case and understanding his story and how it's been handled. We're just thankful for them giving him the opportunity to play." - link
Former Towson FB student-athlete Class cannot rejoin the Tigers after a federal appeals court overturned a District Court ruling late last week, as you may recall, Class suffered heat stroke during a practice two years ago & had been pushing to again be a member of the team, but Judge Niemeyer asserted the university appropriately followed policies of not allowing the return of an ailing athlete (Class has had 14 surgeries since the incident), but also commended Class for his stance - link
The backdrop of Missouri gives The Chronicle of Higher Ed an opportunity to write about the challenges of hiring business leaders as university Presidents,  recounts the background of former Mizzou System boss Wolfe & notes the commitment he made to vastly improving athletic facilities as part of the notorious 'arms race,' authors position, "Public universities are public trusts, not private corporations. Continuing to learn about the state of TV: CNBC interviewed Liberty Media Chairman Malone & Charter Communications CEO Rutledge late last week, Malone adamant that other players aren't seeing the same kind of subscriber attrition that ESPN is experiencing right now, also believes there's likely media consolidation coming with pressures from some of the large digital companies, like Google, Rutledge on bundles & OTT, "We like over-the-top television because it makes our broadband product look better. We like it because it pressures the price of video." - link
Interesting takeaway from Blackstone Group CEO & co-founder Schwarzman whose company has over $300b in total assets, correlation to decision-making in any industry, "One of the rules I've learned is that struggling to try and think your way into making an investment is usually the best way to not have a great outcome. The best investments are the easiest ones to approve. Ironically, when a bunch of very smart people are sitting around a table for hours trying to figure out whether they should do something, that tends to not necessarily lead to the best results." - link
