How different Zacchaeus is from the rich young man in the next chapter of Luke’s Gospel (19:1–10). The rich young man approaches Jesus and tells Him all that he does, and Jesus looks at him and responds with a challenge to the young man’s own perceived goodness. Zacchaeus seeks Jesus out, not to inform Him of the works he does, but to see Him. Then Jesus looks at Zacchaeus, and expresses the desire to visit with him. Then Zacchaeus climbs down and approaches Jesus to tell him what he shall now do. The rich young man goes away sad, but salvation comes to the house of Zacchaeus. Our Lord never forces Himself to be accepted by us, but always desires to be with us. When we realize He is looking at us and desiring to be with us, will we be like the rich young man or Zacchaeus?

St. Dominic taught much by his example. Even when the Brothers needed to be corrected, Dominic did it in the most gentle way because he sought the salvation of all. May we follow his example and witness first by our lives, secondly by our words.

St. Dominic, Burning as a torch for the salvation of sinners, Pray for us!
