Following is a letter from Paul Little, Pasadena Chamber of Commerce

As I am sure you know, the Pasadena City Council is considering raising the minimum wage to $15.00 by 2020 and attaching annual increases after that year based upon CPI increases.

In discussions with City Council members (except for Victor Gordo who has not been able to meet) there seems to be an openness to slowing the process down a bit to see the impact of raising the wage in other communities where we are beginning to see some negative fallout. We have also stressed that we feel it is important that Pasadena do what is in the best interests of the Pasadena community, not Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, or any other community for that matter.

One of the things that we have found in talking with people is there is an understanding that everyone would like workers to make more money. And if we could reasonably do that under the model that exists, we would be doing it. But no one knows, with certainty, the impact of a series of wage increases that happen as rapidly as are being proposed.

In our meetings, we have asked for four things:
  1. Slow the process down.

  2. Form a committee of business people, union representatives and city council/staff to understand what is best for Pasadena.

  3. Consideration of including total compensation (for tipped employees who make well over the minimum wage).

  4. Inclusion of a wage rate for first time employees, those under 18, who are joining the work force for the first time.
There are varying degrees of openness to these ideas depending on the Council person.

The City will be having a critically important meeting on November 19 at 6 p.m. at Caltech’s Cahill Hameetman Auditorium located at 1216 California Boulevard, Pasadena, CA.

The Auditorium is the red modern building on the south side of the street. Parking is free after 5 p.m. in the underground structure just south of the building on the campus of Caltech.

This is the meeting where we need to make ourselves heard. Each council person (except Mr. Gordo) has indicated that, if they see no support for what we are talking about, they are going to have a hard time supporting any of the above ideas.

Many are, understandably, reluctant to speak in a public forum on a matter such as this. That is why the Pasadena Chamber and our Board have taken a strong position in support of our local businesses and business owners in opposing the Los Angeles minimum wage proposal in Pasadena.

We look forward to seeing you on November 19 at Caltech.

Paul Little
