Greetings from the CTL!

Hello, and happy holidays!

This is our last newsletter of 2015, but never fear - there is much to look forward to! This newsletter highlights two
upcoming opportunities to learn about and discuss teaching with your colleagues - the Great Ideas Symposium and the (Not Just) New Adjunct Orientation. Our last Adjunct Spotlight of 2015 introduces us to Karen Finch from the College of Education - a career teacher who now helps support future teachers.

While December is a busy time of the year (who decided to put finals and the holidays in the same month?), it is also a great time to reflect on what teaching techniques worked for you and your students this semester. So I invite you to take a moment and think about one specific thing you did in class this semester that really helped your students learn. Was it in in-class activity? A review sheet for the exam? Reviewing drafts of their papers? Whatever it was, feel free to jot down those thoughts for your future reference, and/or send your reflections to me - I would love to hear about what's happening in your classes!

This marks the end of the first year of the Adjunct Faculty Newsletter. It has been my pleasure to be in touch with all of you in this way, and I hope you have found the information provided helpful. If you have suggestions about how to improve the newsletter for 2016 and beyond, please feel free to be in touch.

Have a great holiday season!

Best,
Teresa Focarile

Great Ideas Symposium

Save the date for this year’s symposium: January 5, 2016. This year’s symposium features two keynote sessions facilitated by Elizabeth Barkley (author of Student Engagement Techniques), breakout sessions and  a poster session showcasing Boise State’s finest faculty, staff and contributors focused on teaching and learning, all of which will take place in the exciting, new College of Innovation and Design (morning refreshments and lunch provided). What more could you ask for? RSVP for the Symposium here!

Don't forget - free parking is available for adjuncts who wish to attend CTL events! Please email the CTL at ctl@boisestate.edu to get the parking code for this event (or any other you plan to attend).

Adjunct Spotlight: Karen Finch

Karen Finch is an adjunct with the College of Education, serving as an education supervisor liaison for elementary and secondary interns and student teachers. This is her third year at Boise State, after being an elementary teacher in the Boise School District for 24 years and in California for 17 years.  She is able to draw from her diverse experiences across many grade levels and teaching communities and share those experiences with her Boise State students.

Karen enjoys her role as a liaison tremendously. "I enjoy visiting many schools and love the dynamics and diversity that each school encompasses. I am able to observe students through grades K-12 and see the uniqueness of all learning levels. Being a part of the community of both the elementary education liaison group and the secondary education liaison group is so rewarding. We come from various backgrounds, but have the common goal of producing the best new teachers in Idaho."
