IT Nation 2015 recap: Friday Morning Keynote by Marcus Lemonis

Dear <<First Name>>,

The ConnectWise IT Nation 2015 conference in Orlando included some great sessions!  Now that we are all back to the "real world", trying to capture, remember and put that info to good use can be a big job.  So, I thought that I'd share my notes from the conference with you in case you find them helpful for later reference (or if you were not able to attend the conference, to give you an idea of what was discussed).
Here's my notes from the Friday morning keynote session by Marcus Lemonis (of CNBC's "The Profit"):

To be successful, you need to know:
  • Why you DO the things you do
  • Why you THINK the way you do
Marcus then went on to share with the audience some very personal details of his childhood and early adult life.  The challenges included being molested, homeless, eating disorder, overweight, no friends, and several more.  He found "his role" in life when he negotiated a deal in college to allow him to graduate without attending a Spanish class while his professor "got tenure" and he agreed to help the university advance a request for a road-related project.

Why did he tell us all these "personal" details?
  • Being "vulnerable" helped you feel more connected to him
  • Relationships are often built on vulnerability
  • Once you show vulnerability (and if you are not "heartless"), you will talk and relate to him
  • It gives others the permission to "be themselves"
People prefer to "do business" with people they like and feel "connected" to

Question:  "Stand up if you have an employee that you 'wish you didn't' have...."
  • If you haven't had a conversation with that employee about your feelings, you are not doing your job as a leader
  • Employees RELY on you, and are YOUR responsibility (just like your kids)
  • They trust you with their futures, their mortgages, their families
  • They expect you to LEAD them
  • Your task:  Go back home and tell that employee:
    • "It was YOU I was thinking about...."
    • I'm sorry, and it's MY FAULT that I have let you act/behave/perform in a way that led me to feel the way I do.  Starting now, I'm going to lead in a way to address those problems (and you'll change those items, or we'll part company....)
He described his job in life as a "Villain Killer"
  • Always rooting for the underdog
  • "I am that guy, the underdog...."
We tend to think that certain traits are "mutually exclusive", in that you can be "one" of them, but not both.  He rejected that assertion and said that you can be both:
  • Aggressive and Kind
  • Hard-working and Warm
  • Tough Negotiator and Generous
Marcus stated that:
  • Biggest fear:  Dying alone
  • "I don't have a lot of friends"
  • "I don't have a lot of confidence (but I am a good faker)"
He suggested that you should:
  • "Journal" (write down your thoughts) as a cathartic exercise
  • Do MORE for your people
The product you sell is YOU
  • The service you provide is just the vehicle you use
  • Sell yourself FIRST, then sell the service
In the Q&A with the audience, Marcus showed that, while your focus as a leader should be on your people, they are counting on you to know/manage the key NUMBERS in your business, and you MUST know the numbers critical to your business and your success.
