What SAC Does For YOU

Check out the SAC historical timeline for a list of issues tackled by the Staff Association Council on your behalf. Among the accomplishments: preserving Winter Break, initiating Falk Pharmacy prescription delivery, hosting an annual assembly for Pitt staff, and establishing staff access to parking on campus.
Diaper Drive Success!
A big THANK YOU to all staff members who contributed to our November diaper and food drive benefiting the Oakland Community Food Pantry in South Oakland. Your tremendous contributions helped to resupply the Pantry as they prepare for the upcoming holidays. (We condensed everything in the picture below; there was a lot!)  You can donate electronically through the CHS website.
The Staff Association Council was pleased to host representatives from the Allies Network at its last general meeting. The Allies Network is designed to improve visibility and support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, allied, and asexual (LGBTQIA) students and employees at the University of Pittsburgh.

Sherdina D. Harper, Coordinator of Cultural Programs within the Office of Cross Cultural & Leadership Development (CCLD) informed SAC that “While other minority individuals can often identify role models and mentors, the invisibility of sexual orientation makes it very difficult for LGBTQIA members of the University of Pittsburgh community to ascertain where they can safely turn for support and information. The Allies Network strives to empower easily recognizable individuals who are able to provide these resources.”

The Allies Network offers staff training to enhance the knowledge and sensitivity of Pitt employees to LGBTQIA issues. Staff are encouraged to register for the next Allies training course scheduled for March 4, 2016 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm on the 6th floor in the William Pitt Union, where some of the following topics will be discussed:

•          What is an Allies Network?
•          What is LGBTQIA?
•          Coming Out
•          Microaggressions
•          Being an Ally
•          Panel Discussion (Students from Rainbow Alliance)

They will also host specific training for your group of 12 or more.  If you have any questions or concerns about the Allies Network, please contact Sherdina D. Harper at sdh34@pitt.edu.

MEET SAC MEMBER BETH ANN PISCHKE

Beth Ann Pischke is the Administrator for the Center for Bioethics and Health Law.  She also serves as the administrator for the HealthLaw Certificate Program, the Master of Studies in Law degree program and the Certificate in Disability Legal Studies program.  All of these programs are housed within the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Law.  Beth Ann has worked at the University of Pittsburgh for 32 years.

Her involvement with SAC:  Beth Ann joined SAC in May of 2014.  She is currently a member of the External Relations Committee.

Her involvement with SAC:  Beth Ann says, “I joined SAC because I wanted to become more involved with the University outside of my day-to-day job.  (I also wanted) to have the opportunity to meet others and network with others within the University of Pittsburgh.  SAC has offered me an opportunity to meet an amazing group of people who are all very driven to improve the working environment for staff at Pitt.”

What is her vision on how SAC can impact the University?  Beth Ann says, “SAC can offer a lot of useful information to staff.  SAC members come from a wide-range of departments and its members offer a lot of positive feedback for maintaining a good work environment for all Pitt staff.”

Fun Facts about Beth Ann:  “I have worked for the University of Pittsburgh for 31 years.  I enjoy spending time with family and friends, gardening, and traveling.  I recently traveled to Italy and toured the Amalfi coast. I plan to return to Italy in the not too distant future."
We want to brag about exemplary Pitt staff who achieve greatness in and out of the workplace. Know a co-worker that was recognized for their work in the community? Tell us! Email sac@pitt.edu today!

Faculty and Staff Development Program Adds Certificate Program for Supervisors this Fall

The Faculty and Staff Development Program has added a much-needed program to its line-up this fall. The HR Administration Certificate Program is aimed at helping University supervisors navigate the responsibilities associated with tasks such as talent acquisition, compensation administration, FMLA administration and others.

The series of eight workshops is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of supervisors who not only carry out day-to-day HR tasks but also the important responsibilities of performance management and fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Participants receive a certificate upon completion of all eight workshops and satisfactory completion of a Knowledge Mastery Test. For descriptions of each workshop and to register for these workshops online, visit
