Un comité canadien composé d’artistes en danse a sélectionné Marie-Josée Chartier comme récipiendaire du prix Jacqueline Lemieux pour reconnaître ses importantes contributions dans ce milieu en tant que créatrice, interprète, enseignante et activiste. Voici leurs commentaires:
Chartier se forge une carrière depuis trois décennies au Canada et à l’étranger. Son travail est interdisciplinaire et exploratoire avec un focus particulier sur l’intégration du mouvement et de la voix. Une artiste qui prend des risques, Marie-Josée tisse avec humour, excentrisme et fragilité humaine des chorégraphies qui continuent d’inspirer et de surprendre. Elle incorpore ces éléments dans ses rôles de chorégraphe, enseignante, mentor aux danseurs et musiciens. En réponse à un besoin vital, Chartier a fait une contribution formidable et durable dans le milieu de la danse comme membre fondateur du Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (CADA) en 1986, réunissant les artistes en danse à s’organiser, afin d’élaborer des standards de conditions de travail et de rémunération. L’esprit d’exploration artistique, sa générosité et son engagement politique continuent de jouer un rôle incontestable dans le milieu de la danse au Canada.

A peer committee made up of dance artists from across Canada selected Marie-Josée Chartier for the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize in recognition of her significant contributions to the dance milieu as a creator, performer, teacher and advocate. Here are their comments:
Chartier’s career spans over three decades, across Canada and abroad. Her work is interdisciplinary and explorative, with a particular focus in the area of movement and voice. An artistic risk-taker, Marie-Josée weaves humour, eccentricity, and human fragility into her pieces which continue to surprise and inspire. She brings these elements to her role as a choreographer, teacher and mentor to both dancers and musicians. In response to a critical need, Chartier made a formidable and lasting contribution to the dance milieu as a founding member of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists (CADA) in 1986, organizing individual dance artists into one united voice and establishing fundamental standards for payment and working conditions. Marie-Josée’s spirit of artistic exploration, generosity and advocacy continues to play a significant role in the Canadian artistic milieu. Read more: www.chartierdanse.com

Le prix Jacqueline Lemieux sera présenté à Marie-Josée Chartier par la directrice au service de la danse du Conseil des Arts du Canada Caroline Lussier. Ceci aura lieu le 27 novembre à l’occasion de la soirée The Whole Shebang où Chartier y présentera une de ces oeuvres étude pour silhouette accroupie dansée par le formidable Brendan Wyatt avec musique de Rodney Sharman. Concocté par Andrea Nann du Dreamwalker Dance Company avec la collaboration de Helen Yung, cette soirée vous emporte vers les heures mystérieuses de la nuit où se fondent lumière, son, danse, théâtre, arts médiatiques, marionnettes, contes et musique. Oh Susanna, Michael Ondaatje, Peter Mettler, Kate Holden ne sont que quelques figures extraordinaires qui collaborent à cet événement.

étude pour silhouette accroupie sera aussi présentée le 27 février 2016, dans le contexte du New Music Festival produit par l’Orchestre Symphonique de Vancouver. La représentation sera accompagnée par la musique ‘live’ (piano et quatuor à cordes). Théâtre et musiciens à confirmer. The Jacqueline Lemieux Prize will be presented to Marie-Josée Chartier by Caroline Lussier, Director of the Dance Section at the Canada Council for the Arts. It will take place in Toronto on November 27th at The Whole Shebang, where Chartier will present study for a crouching figure, danced by the remarkable Brendan Wyatt with music by Rodney Sharman. Curated by Dreamwalker Dance Company’s Andrea Nann with Helen Yung, this special event invites you to experience the mysterious hours of the night through light, sound, dance, theatre, media arts, shadow puppetry, storytelling and music. Contributors include Oh Susanna, Michael Ondaatje, Peter Mettler, Kate Holden among many other great artists.

study for a crouching figure will also be presented on February 27th, 2016 as part of the New Music Festival produced by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Constantinople, un événement multi-média, musical et théâtral, mis en scène et chorégraphié par Marie-Josée Chartier avec musique de Christos Hatzis et interprété par le Gryphon Trio, Patricia O’Callaghan et Maryem Hassan Tollar est revisité pour le superbe Centre Ismaili à Toronto. Cette production aura une nouvelle vie dans un nouveau lieu après onze années de tournées nationales et internationales.

Constantinople, a musical and theatrical multi-media performance directed and choreographed by Marie-Josée Chartier with music by Christos Hatzis and performed by the Gryphon Trio, Patricia O’Callaghan and Maryem Hassan Tollar is being re-staged for the beautiful Ismaili Centre in Toronto. After eleven years of touring nationally and internationally this new re-imagined version is given a new life in a new environment.

Dans les prochains mois, Marie-Josée continue son exploration chorégraphique de petites danses : huit nouvelles courtes pièces réunies par un concept musical qui recevra sa première à l’automne 2016 au théâtre du Market Hall de Peterborough présenté par Public Energy et suivi d’une tournée canadienne en 2017. Ces photos ont été prises lors de notre résidence de création en septembre dernier au Market Hall avec un amalgame d’interprètes de Toronto et de Peterborough. Nous nous sommes concentrés sur la création du Quatuor, Sextuor et Octuor.

In the following months, Marie-Josée continues her choreographic research for petites danses: eight new short works united by a musical concept will premiere in the fall of 2016 at the Market Hall Theatre in Peterborough presented by Public Energy followed by Canadian touring in 2017. These photos were taken during our September residency at the Market Hall with a mix of performers from Toronto and Peterborough. We focused on the development of the Quartet, Sextet and Octet.
