Remember:  Before your next purchase from Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and select Habersham Humane Society as your charity of choice, and Amazon will donate a portion of all of your future purchases to HHS.   When you sign in again, be sure to use smile.amazon.com and it will ask if you want to keep HHS as your charity, and just press YES.  All prices are the same and the experience is exactly the same.  The difference is that Amazon gives HHS a small percentage of the purchase.

SpayGeorgia’s goal: To reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats in Georgia by providing low cost spay/neuter certificates to Georgia residents in need of partial financial assistance. - See more at:  www.spaygeorgia.org
Special BIG Thanks to Piedmont student, Jordan Evans, for her donation to HHS for the Habersham Animal Shelter for her Compass Project.   She collected food and treats, leashes/collars, lots of blankets/flannel sheets/rags for bedding as well as many dog toys. HHS Volunteer Kay Beavers delivered them to the shelter.

Northeast Georgia Spay Neuter Information
During the upcoming Season of Giving, HHS hopes you'll remember the animals of Habersham County that count on your generous help thru a donation to HHS to help us continue our crucial work on their behalf.
Thank you Emma!  Paws Cause, our friends in Oakwood, load our van each month with food for the local county shelter and our fosters, senior center and the TNR team.

Atlanta Humane Society's mobile spay/neuter unit will be in Habersham County 4 times (at least, we hope more) in 2016.  Watch our newsletter and Facebook page for dates & info!

Habersham Humane Society has fostered & transported a total of 51 animals so far in 2015!!!
BIG Thanks to all our foster parents & transport drivers who make these Happy Ever After dreams come true!!

Every transported animal, especially puppies, requires medical exams & shots before getting on the van. Donations are always needed to help us help them!!

HHS needs more volunteer drivers to deliver dogs to Acworth. Call 706-839-1040 if you are interested in volunteering for this very rewarding service.

Tucker's high energy level and youth were too much for his elderly owners. They contacted HHS by way of Cornelia Animal Control asking for our help. HHS was able to transport Tucker to Animal Refuge League in Portland, Maine where several days after arriving he was adopted. Tucker will be doing lots of hiking and fetching with his new owners who are young and very active.
Bert and Ernie came to the foster program at HHS after a compassionate person contacted us asking if we could transport them. They had been "dumped" and left to fend for themselves in a rural area of Habersham County.  Needless to say these darling boys were adopted on their first day available!
These adorable brothers were fostered with our Junior Ambassador, Morgan Gragg, where they got tons of playtime, affection and basic training.
Before heading up North, they also were brought up to date on their core vaccinations and worming.  Here they are, happy to arrive at Bangor Humane Society in Maine.
Bert's feeling like "King of the Hill" with his new parents, headed home finally to be loved and cared for.
Ernie already loves being cuddled by his new Mom.

A Note from long time HHS Volunteer, Nancy Lanier:

I have been fortunate enough to be entrusted with foster/transport animals for Habersham Humane Society since January 2011. On my first transport trip, I met Heather Simon along with a few other Road Trip Home women, school teachers by day but animal advocates at heart putting all their free time into saving unwanted pets by organizing foster/transport. Many positive changes have been made at RTH since that time. They have grown into a well respected and professional transport group sending pets to 8 different shelters in 5 northeastern states. Hardly a week goes by that one of their vans is not heading north.
HHS has sent 642 pets with RTH over those 5 years.  RTH is easy to work with, organized, ethical, dependable and sends the pets to high quality, no kill shelters. In other words, HHS can trust RTH. This is extremely important in my book.
I could not be happier for or prouder of these well deserving people on the recent opening of their own facility, a dream come true. This will benefit their operations in multiple ways. I look forward to seeing the growth and progress RTH will accomplish in the future.

Transporting/transferring homeless animals from Habersham County to our northern rescue partners means less crowding in the local animal shelter which means less euthanasia.

It costs  approx. $50 to send an animal on a transport. Consider DONATING to this life-saving program.
Amy came to HHS's foster program by way of an owner surrender. Amy stayed with foster mom, Carmen Mas, for several weeks while recovering from her spay and getting up to date on her vaccinations.
Amy went to Bangor Humane Society and, being a total sweetheart, was adopted on her first day available! Her new mom sent us pictures (here with her new Dad) and even called to give us an update. Amy is one happy girl!

Adoption Day at one of the shelters in Maine.  A big day for HHS's fostered/transported animals!
This is one of HHS foster dogs transported to New Hampshire with his new "Mom" - both looking happy!
HHS altered 52 pets during the October 2-day event working with Atlanta Humane Society's mobile surgical unit.
That brings our total for 2015 to 205!!

Habersham Humane Society has helped to spay and neuter an estimated 700 animals since last year.   We are making an impact!

We appreciate the support of our local community, our local veterinarians and the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, The Atlanta Humane Society Mobile Unit, our hard-working volunteers and The Two Mauds Foundation for their gift that helped make this goal possible.

An unspayed female dog, her mate, and all of their puppies, and all of their puppies' puppies, if none are ever neutered or spayed, add up quickly:
By second year that’s 128 animals.
By the third year that’s 512 animals.
By the fourth year that’s 2048 animals.
By the fifth year that’s 12,288 animals.
By the fifth year that’s 67,000 animals.

National estimates indicate that approximately 3 to 4 million of the animals who enter shelters nationwide every year are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats) simply because there is no one to adopt them.  Only 10 percent of the animals received by shelters nationwide have been spayed or neutered.  Approximately 75 percent of owned pets are spayed/neutered. The reduction of shelter populations due to the prevention of unwanted births will allow an increase in the time and resources available for finding suitable adoptive homes for shelter animals.  Prevention of unwanted births reduces the expenditure of your tax dollars used to collect, feed, house, kill and dispose of unwanted animals in Georgia.

A large number of pets are still unaltered in this county.  The generous grant we received in 2015 from the Two Mauds Foundation can be renewed in 2016 if local city or county officials will make a matching grant.  Continuing this grant is vital. Please contact your local leaders and urge them to support HHS in this mission.

Thank you,
Habersham Humane Society Team
