Celebrating December Graduates

SWU's Alumni Association held receptions in Central (left) and Columbia (right) honoring December graduates this past week. The Alumni Association is planning a reception in Charleston Nov. 30, N. Augusta Dec. 1 and Greenville Dec. 3.

Personnel Announcements

Effective Nov. 1, Thomas Parham was promoted to systems analyst within the IT department. Prior to this appointment, Parham has been employed at SWU as Computer Support Specialist since 2012 and, before that, at the City of Clemson for six years. He completed his BSBA through SWU’s AGS program in 2013. Please join us in congratulating him on this promotion.
 
Bradley Bowen begins Nov. 16 as a part-time security officer (weekend evenings). Bradley is also employed as a criminal justice instructor at Tri-County Tech while pursuing his Ed.D. at Liberty University where he holds an MA in public policy. He also received an MS in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. Bradley has also served in law enforcement with the sheriff’s offices at Pickens and Anderson counties as well as six years in the South Carolina National Guard.

NA student honored for service, sacrifice

The American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Commission for Admissions, Orientation, and First Year Experience selected Dr. Justin Carter, associate vice president for student life, to their directorate board. Carter has 14 years of experience working in student affairs, including several years in a first year experience housing program. According to Carter, “As part of the directorate board, I have the opportunity to influence the scope and direction of programming in this area. It will be beneficial for me to network and learn about growing trends in orientation.” ACPA includes 7500 members representing 1,200 private and public institutions around the world. 

United Way helps its local communities with free tax preparation

Through United Way and VITA, if your household income is $50,000 or less, you may be eligible for FREE income tax preparation assistance. To find out more, simply call 2-1-1 for an appointment.
 
You can HELP by volunteering with VITA as an income tax preparer or site coordinator for the upcoming tax season. Tax preparers typically prepare simple 1040 or 1040-Z tax returns and answer taxpayers’ questions. Site coordinators manage all aspects of the site operations, including tax preparation, ensuring high quality customer service for clients. For either volunteer position, training is provided. This is a great volunteer opportunity for college students, current employees, and retirees. Fine Arts this week

Autumn Echoes – Thursday, Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m.
The Concert Choir, SWU’s largest in the history of the school, will present a widely varied program of music from many styles. Conducted by Dr. Don R. Campbell, the choir sings with power and excitement. There is nothing like the sound of beautiful choral music.

Music Majors Formal Recital – Friday, Nov. 20, 4:30 p.m.
SWU music majors are featured in the Music Majors Formal Recital on Friday.

These events are part of SWU’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the Central Campus. Admission is free. For details, call ext. 5408.

Loss of alumnus' wife deeply felt by SWU community

SWU is mourning the loss of 2008 alumnus Davey Blackburn’s wife following a violent home invasion at their Indianapolis home. Amanda Grace Blackburn was shot during a home invasion Nov. 10. 
She was taken to the hospital, where she died the following morning. Funeral services took place yesterday with several SWU representatives present. Read more>>

Rev. Matt LeRoy is the guest speaker for the B.H. and Dorothy Phaup Holiness Emphasis series Nov. 16-18, 2015 at SWU’s Central campus. Matt is co-pastor of Love Chapel Hill, an eclectic church plant in downtown Chapel Hill, N.C. Matt and Sarah have twin sons, Luke and Sam. He is the co-author of two books, “The Way Forward” and “Awakening Grace.”

From the Health Center

Flu shots are available by appointment through the Health Center. The cost is $25. We will be able to file on your insurance this year through Baptist Easley or you can pay with cash or check. If you are interested, please contact Nurse Herron at ext. 5134 or Debbie Eller deller@swu.edu or ext. 5131 for an appointment. 
Nurse Practitioner Jessica Rivera is in the Health Center on Monday and Thursday mornings. She will see patients by appointment 8:15 – 11:30 a.m. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting Debbie Eller at ext. 5131 or Nurse Lori Herron at extension 5134. Services are for both minor urgent care issues and preventative/primary care including physicals and management of chronic medical issues. 

Rivera is also available to do sports physicals for employee’s children. Just call for an appointment.

The services provided by the Nurse Practitioner from Baptist Easley will be billed to insurance. All billing will be handled by Baptist Easley Hospital. 

Dr. Beacham will continue to be on campus but his services will only be for students. If you have additional questions please direct those to Nurse Herron.

SWU is 'keeping in step'
SWU's Wellness Program has organized a walking group that meets daily at Noon at the Joe R. Gilbert Track and Field complex. For details, contact Beverley Abranches, exercise specialist, at ext. 5139 or email babranches@swu.edu.
Recent research shows that horseradish protects against Listeria, E. Coli, Staphylococcus aureus and other food pathogens. The next time someone passes around the horseradish sauce with the roast meat, don’t pass it on without helping yourself!
