A timely question...

Pennsylvania's primary deer-hunting season is set to open on Nov. 30, and we got to wondering how many deer were harvested in Adams County during the 2014-2015 season. Read on to find out.

With gratitude ...

We thank all of you who made gifts to the Land Conservancy through the Adams County Community Foundation's Giving Spree back on November 10. We haven't gotten word yet on our total gift (or our share of the $30,000 in matching funds provided by the Foundation), but no matter what the amount, we're deeply grateful to everyone who remembered us that day!

While we're at it, we're also thankful for your financial contributions in response to our annual year-end appeal. Please know that we work hard to keep our overhead razor-thin ... as a result, we're able to devote well over 90% of every dollar you give to mission-related work. That means that when you give to the Land Conservancy, you can know that your contribution really does help preserve Adams County's beautiful rural lands and character. Thank you!

Thank you, Gettysburg Green Gathering!

We were thrilled and grateful to accept a donation of $1,000 from the Gettysburg Green Gathering earlier this month. Every year, the GGG seeks to educate, inspire, and foster environmental stewardship in Adams County through a popular one-day music and arts festival that's been attracting bigger crowds every year. The GGG's 2016 festival date is May 21!

How many deer were harvested in Adams County in 2014-2015?

It's hard to say exactly. Adams County lies within Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 5A, which includes most of Adams County as well as parts of Franklin, Cumberland, and York counties—so the numbers we have are not specific to Adams County alone. That said, within WMU 5A, in the 2014-2015 hunting season an estimated 2,400 antlered deer (bucks) and 3,300 antlerless deer (does) were harvested.

Deer hunting in Adams County is a popular long-standing tradition that provides countless hours of recreation for thousands of hunters, and is a valuable food source for many—in fact Pennsylvania has more hunters per square mile than any other state in the country (see image above, from the Quality Deer Management Association).

Open space is essential to keeping our hunting tradition alive for future generations. While preserved land doesn’t necessarily increase hunter access—since providing hunter access to their land always remains the landowner’s choice, even after the land is preserved—it does provide the wildlife habitat that's crucial to maintaining a healthy deer herd.
When you include a gift to the Land Conservancy in your will or estate plan, you join a growing number of visionaries committed to protecting Adams County’s special places for future generations. Contact us to learn how you can support the Land Conservancy’s mission to preserve Adams County’s rural lands and character through your will, living trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy.
