National Council for Teachers of English Annual Convention 
BSM is proud to be sending all of its English teachers (both senior high and junior high) to the National Council for Teachers of English Annual Convention. The convention takes place in Minneapolis this year on November 19-22, so it couldn't be more convenient. This gathering of thousands of K-12 and college English teachers from across the country, provides hundreds of workshop sessions and keynote speakers covering all aspects of teaching English. The convention allows our teachers to interact with colleagues from across the nation and keep current with teaching practices.

Additionally, two BSM teachers are official presenters at the convention! English teacher Anne Marie Dominguez and social studies teacher Megan Kern will be sharing their experience of designing and teaching their cross-curricular course American Studies.

2015-2016 Annual Fund 
From tuition assistance to faculty development, curriculum enhancement and technology improvements, the Annual Fund supports everything that happens at BSM on a daily basis. Your support has a direct impact on the experience of all students here at Benilde-St. Margaret's School. You recently received a call to action in the mail, please consider making an Annual Fund gift today. Gifts can be mailed to BSM (attention: Advancement Department), or you can easily can make them online. We thank you for your continued support!

National Honor Society Tutoring
NHS provides on-campus tutoring for any BSM student requesting help. To request an NHS tutor, please use the following protocol:
  • Students wishing to receive tutoring should fill out a tutor request form online.
  • NHS will then match the student with an NHS member who is proficient in the requested subject area(s).
  • The tutor and the student will meet and arrange time(s) to work together.The amount of tutoring received will depend on the student’s needs and availability. Places for tutoring will be arranged personally between the student and his/her assigned tutor.
Please encourage your students who need extra help to contact us, and remember that NHS tutoring is for ALL Red Knights, both senior high and junior high.

Board of Directors Nominations
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Board of Directors is currently seeking nominations for three-year terms beginning July 1, 2016. Nominees for board positions are considered from current parents, past parents, alumni and friends of BSM who share a passion for the mission of BSM, and are dedicated to achieving BSM’s vision. In addition, members are being sought for board committees.

The Board of Directors is the governing board of Benilde-St. Margaret’s School. Prospective board and board committee members should have demonstrated leadership ability, experience working in a collaborative setting and prior board experience. We are specifically seeking expertise in the following areas: advancement, technology, marketing, human resources and leadership. Also, we are seeking individuals who embrace the culture of philanthropy.

To be eligible to serve on the Board or a board committee, a candidate must meet the following criteria: (i) be at least 18 years old, (ii) be willing to give time and energy to the advancement of BSM, including attendance at meetings, (iii) be competent in at least one of the areas of Board responsibility. Employees of BSM and their immediate family members are not eligible to be directors.

Senior High

Spring Break 2017 in Italy!

This is open to anyone who will be in grades 10-12 next school year, but of particular interest to students taking Latin or AP European History and anyone interested in the art, culture, and history of Italy and of the church. We will visit Venice, Florence, San Gimignano, Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri and Rome, plus a special visit to the Vatican! An early enrollment credit of $400 is available if you sign up by Wednesday, December 2!  Come to an informational meeting tonight, Wednesday, November 18, 7 p.m. in the BSM Library. Contact Mr. Epler via email or visit him in Room 25. 

Journalism & Graphic Design Students Recognized at National Convention! 
BSM senior high students were recognized at the 2015 National Scholastic Press Association/Journalism Education Association awards given at the National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando this past weekend. A combination of writers and graphic design students from BSM attended. Congratulations to all our participants and winners, BSM proud. For results and full story, click here!
Junior High

Lutsen Ski Trip!

The junior high trip to Lutsen, which takes place over our semester break, January 22-25, has been advertised to all junior high students. The Lutsen weekend is an event that Dave Platt has been doing for 21 years. It's a great trip for both skiers and snowboarders. If you are interested in sending your son or daughter on the Lutsen weekend, a $100 deposit is due today Wednesday, November 18. Contact Dave Platt if you have any questions. 
 
Athletics & Activities

ImPACT Baseline for All Winter Athletes

Friday, November 20 in room 143 at 3 p.m.
Cost: $5 charged to student's tuition
Athletes: Please bring you school laptop.

Neurocognitive tests, such as ImPACT, are helpful in providing objective information about how the brain is responding to injury. ImPACT has two components- a pre- and post-concussion test. The pre-test is very valuable as the scoring represents one’s baseline (normal) brain function. The ImPACT test is then repeated post concussion. Results of the pre- and post-concussion tests are compared and care plans are then developed. If a pre-test was not completed prior to a concussion, an ImPACT post-concussion test is still a reliable tool in the assessment of brain function.  In addition, it is recommended that the ImPACT test be completed on an annual basis due to natural maturing of the brain which can lead to scoring changes over time.

Note that all varsity athletes will have already taken it this winter. This is optional for all lower level athletes if you wish for your child to take the computer baseline. This is an excusable tardy/absence from practice or game. Please let coaches know beforehand.

Chipotle Night to Support BSM Hockey

Show your team spirit by joining us for a fundraiser to support BSM boys' hockey teams. Come in to the Chipotle at 3040 Excelsior Blvd in Minneapolis on Wednesday, December 2, 5 p.m.- 8 p.m.. Tell the cashier you are supporting BSM hockey to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' hockey team.
 

Girls' Swimming & Diving Qualifiers for State

Senior Grace Hedin, juniors Maria Satre and Madison Semler, and freshman Ava Schieffert all qualified for the Minnesota State High School girls' swim meet! Each of these four swimmers advanced, from individual and team relay finals. Way to go ladies, go Red Knights! For more information on the section meet, click here

State Meet - November 18-20, diving is held on Wednesday, November 18, swimming prelims on Thursday, November 19, and finals on Friday, November 20 beginning at noon each day at University Aquatics Center at the University of Minnesota.

Junior High Dad's Night Out is Tonight!
Please join us for the junior high Dad's Night Out! This is a casual, drop in event.

Auction Notes 
Thanks to the many people who made the annual auction, A Knight for All Seasons, a huge success. Although the final numbers are not in, the total raised definitely surpassed the $200,000 mark. It would not have been possible without the support of the BSM community. Merci!

The winner of the raffle and the twelve $100 restaurant gift cards was BSM parent Joan Reynders. If you know her, now is the time to suggest a night out for her friends.

Wondering about the woman’s black coat in your closet? Some female auction attendee left with the wrong black coat. Please check to make certain that you have the correct coat. Call Mary Fran O’Keefe at 952-915-4360 to arrange the exchange.

Christmas can be a win-win for you and BSM. As a follow-up to the auction, Bergstrom Jewelers at West End is offering a special program to benefit the Red Knights. Ten percent of any purchase made before the end of the year will be donated back to the school.
 
Save the date - Father Daughter Dinner Dance!
Senior high female students and their dads/guardians are invited to attend the Father Daughter Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 20, 6-11 p.m. at the Earle Brown Heritage Center.

This year’s theme is "MidKnight Rodeo." Get ready to put on your boots and bling, and spend a wonderful evening with your daughters. Formal invitations will be sent in mid-January.
 
All-New Mother Son Knight!
Mark your 2016 calendar and save the date for the Mother Son Knight Friday, March 11, 6-9 p.m., for senior high boys and mothers/guardians. Get your game on at Pinstripes in Edina, the all-new location for this year's event! Try your luck at our Casino Knight presented by Las Vegas Tonight, and enjoy boccie ball, bowling and bonfires. Pinstripes Bistro will be serving homemade pasta, pizza, flatbreads, salad and dessert. Win prizes, and watch the senior boys salute their moms with a song and dance, before the moms return the favor.

Parents of Seniors: 

  1. Scholarships from colleges:  Look on each of your colleges’ websites for scholarships. You can find this information in the admissions section of a college’s website. Many colleges use the application for admission to award scholarships, but some colleges require that you fill out an additional scholarship application for some or all of their scholarships. Typically, college scholarship applications are due between December and February, but some may be earlier.
  2. Local and National Scholarships (Not from a college): To locate scholarship information in Naviance, from the home page, click on the "Colleges" tab, and scroll down to the bottom of the page. The "scholarship list" and "National Scholarship Search" are located here. Other helpful sites are bigfuture.collegeboard.org, fastweb.com, scholarships.com. Scholarship searches should be FREE. You should not pay for this service or to apply for a scholarship.
  3. The College Financial Aid Program for Parents of Seniors is Wednesday, January 6 at 7 p.m. in the BSM Theater. Jeron Schmidt, Associate Director for Admissions at Northland College and Danielle Whitney, Admissions Counselor for Iowa State, will be presenting. They will discuss the financial aid process, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and CSS Profile forms, and sources to help pay for college.

Parents of Juniors:

You will be receiving a letter in the mail from the counselors regarding setting up your Naviance parent account. Naviance is our website devoted to the college planning and application process. We require that at least one parent register with Naviance so we can communicate with students and parents regarding the college process throughout junior and senior years via this website.

If your student has received a varsity award and would like to purchase a letter jacket, the representative will be at school today, Wednesday, November 18, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the cafeteria.
