Announcing the ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA SimBuild 2016 Conference
ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA have announced a second, co-organized conference that encompasses the ASHRAE Energy Modeling and IBPSA-USA SimBuild Conferences. The co-organized conference, titled ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA SimBuild 2016: Building Performance Modeling, takes place Aug. 10-12, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Hours Met: Answers to Your Energy Modeling Questions
Neal Kruis, Ph.D., Vice President of Big Ladder Software, presents the fourth of a recurring article series looking at the solutions energy modelers are finding on Unmet Hours. This month Neil reviews the life of a question, and highlights the collaborative response from the community--exemplifying the site's utility.
Building Performance Simulation: What's in the Black Box & How Do I Get My BIM Data There?
One of the inter-disciplinary events that IBPSA-USA, Houston and USGBC Texas Gulf Coast Chapter organized this month was Dr. Dru Crawley’s talk on Building Performance Simulation. ASHRAE Houston Chapter also jointly sponsored this meeting with the Association of Energy Engineers. Read a review of the event on the IBPSA-USA website.
January 26: Energy Modeling Best Practices and Applications - ASHRAE Winter Conference Course
Co-Sponsored by IBPSA-USA, this course covers the fundamentals of building energy modeling and explains how to use modeling to guide design decisions, with an emphasis on HVAC. Course participants will learn how to integrate modeling into the design process from the programming stage through post-occupancy and measurement and verification.
December 10: FLUX - Seamless Interoperable Workflows
Learn how the new Flux interoperability tools allow seamless geometry and data exchange between Grasshopper, Dynamo, Excel, and more. Brian Ringley, of Woods Bagot's Global Design Technology Group, will be presenting.
December 15: Modeling 101 - Energy Modeling for Code Compliance, High Performance Buildings, & Building Retrofits
This eight hour (1 day) training familiarizes building professionals including architects, engineers, building code officials, and administrators with the fundamental concepts of whole building energy simulation, the energy modeling protocols of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, and the various applications of energy modeling.
January 24: Variable Refrigerant Flow System Design & Application - ASHRAE Winter Conference Course
Variable Refrigerant Flow systems are now being applied in a range of building types across North America. This course will provide generic non-manufacturer specific concepts of how to apply VRF systems to buildings. The proposed course will supplement the fundamental technology introduction presented in the 2012 ASHRAE HVAC Systems and Equipment handbook.

To the Cloud! Apidae Helps Modelers Turn Information into Knowledge
Cloud computing allows large EnergyPlus-based analyses to be run quickly and cheaply. One of the companies leveraging cloud economics is BUILDlab, an Ithaca-based startup that produces Apidae: a suite of EnergyPlus simulation services.
Design Data Exchange Helps AIA and Member Firms Track and Improve Design Performance
Learn more about the Design Data Exchange--launched earlier this year. The DOE and AIA have developed a portal that streamlines and simplifies 2030 Commitment reporting for signatory firms. The portal also gives firms and AIA members tools to self-study their portfolios, track their progress over time, and study the work of other firms in anonymized aggregate.
