Ganyu Issue 7, November 2015

Hello <<First Name>>
Another busy month for ALPA, with the excitement of the ALPA Coolridge Galiwin'ku fun run, as well as our team heading to Hobart for the presentation of the Australian Training Awards, which we narrowly missed out on. In this issue, we also celebrate one of our employees winning the Adrian Wagg award and got the ball rolling with our concreting business at Galiwinku. We welcome the Lajamanu store to the ALPA group as our 26th store, and celebrate the achievements of our Gapuwiyak and Island & Cape take-aways. We also profile one of our workers from Nauiyu community. You can also view videos of the Milingimbi and Ramingining festivals held last month.
Galiwin'ku ALPA Coolridge Fun Run 2015
The 2015 event was a great  success, launched with a Morning Star traditional dance, followed by a series of races that brought the community together. The Galiwin'ku half marathon was the main event, with individual and relay teams competing, including our ALPA team pictured above. View Images
Other race events like a 10km, 5km and 3km run were also included along with a children's run. Much excitement was generated throughout the entire community! ALPA and Schweppes/Cool Ridge were principal sponsors of the event.

Veronica is an employee of the ALPA Gapuwiyak store who completed a Cert III in Retail Services and plays a vital role in training and supervision of new staff in the store. In the future she wishes to be a manager of the store and ALPA will help her in this aim through a leadership training program. She is pictured above with Angela Nolan and Eve Williams from ALPA. Thanks to the sponsors of the award, NT Department of Education and Training (DET) and Department of Business.

Gapuwiyak Healthy Takeaway
Gapuwiyak ALPA store has been kicking healthy store takeaway goals in recent months. The changes to their takeaway store product range were driven by the willingness of the takeaway staff to try making new things and a preference for preparing healthy foods instead of unhealthy foods for their community.
Items which you will now find on the daily takeaway menu include salad sandwiches and rolls, cold meat and salad packs, prawn and vegetable fried rice, and fresh fruit platters. The takeaway staff ensure that the store is well-stocked with both hot and cold healthy takeaway options so they are readily available to store customers throughout the day. Not stopping there, staff and management have also removed all soft drinks with added sugar from the takeaway in order to make the healthier options the easy options for takeaway customers. All reports, from staff comments to monthly sales data, indicate that the Gapuwiyak community are embracing these positive changes at their local store.
Island & Cape healthy food sales up by 10%
Island & Cape health food sales are up 10 per cent since adopting ALPA's nutrition policy and lowering the price of healthy alternatives. Island and Cape’s General Manager Operations Kim Reynolds says “I think it’s an exciting sign that our customers want to, and are able to buy good quality, affordable healthy food.”
Island and Cape nutritionist Tracey Fitzgibbons says healthy options now include fresh sandwiches, salads, toasted sandwiches, salad rolls, whole BBQ chickens and fruit salads. “The idea is to have healthy food as the first thing the customer sees,” says Tracy. Tracy is also working on health promotion displays and linking it into things like Diabetes Week. Island & Cape are also running healthy cook ups and working with community health organisations including Apunipima Cape York Health Council to get the message across.

Australian Training Awards
On the 19th November in Hobart, ALPA narrowly missed out on winning the Employer of the Year award at the Australian Training Awards. ALPA placed in the top three nationally, alongside two of the biggest businesses in Australia, McDonalds and Crown Casino.
We would like to thank all of our ALPA staff for their outstanding performance to enable us to be considered for this award alongside these huge businesses. ALPA can be justifiably proud of this achievement and hopeful that we can take out the award next year.

Galiwin'ku Housing project underway
Chief Minister Adam Giles came out to Elcho Island in November to see the great work ALPA is doing with our partners Ngarda to build local skills and local jobs as part of the Cyclone Lam Recovery Housing Project.

Through this project, ALPA is developing a locally based concrete batching and supply business that will service the Arnhem region and be crewed by Yolngu work teams. We celebrated the beginning of this exciting new direction for ALPA and also the fist 4 house slabs that have been completed. Well done team ALPA - this is a very exciting step forward for us all!
Ramingining gets ready for Christmas
Our Ramingining store is getting into the Christmas spirit early, with a fantastic display including Santa's hut with some of the first snow seen in Arnhem Land for quite a long while.
Lajamanu Store joing ALPA Group

ALPA has great pleasure in announcing that Lajamanu store has now joined the ALPA group as our 26th retail store. After 19 years as a successfully run independent, the Lajamanu Progress Aboriginal Corporation (LPAC) has entrusted ALPA to continue the successful operation of their store and mechanical repair shop.
