Penn State Football – 2015 Season

This season brought back memories of Charles Dickens great work, A Tale of Two Cities. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us…”

Two superior recruiting classes in a row, a highly touted NFL-caliber QB, scads of young talent, a beautiful Bowl Game win at the Pinstripe Bowl and Nittany Nation was full of hope and glee and ready to kick some BIG 10 booty in 2015.

But that’s why we play the games.

The best of times: Christian Hackenberg became the owner of every significant QB record in PSU history; 7 wins – Buffalo, Rutgers, San Diego State, Army, Indiana, Maryland and Illinois (including 5 in a row); the lift the offense got when future superstar RB Saquon Barkley hit the starting line-up; unbelievable catches from Godwin, Hamilton and Lewis and the defensive play of Carl Nassib.

The worst of times: Interceptions, dropped passes, penalties and fumbles at key points in critical games; hideous special team play; head scratching play calls all over the field but specifically in the red zone; injuries; OSU and MSU.

Will we end with a winter of despair (a bowl loss) or the spring of hope (for the future that we wait makes a much needed appearance in a winning bowl effort)? I, for one, am preparing for a long winter’s nap.

Upcoming events:
  1. January 20, 2016 from 6 PM to 8 PM – We will host a meet and greet with the new Dean of the College of Information Science and Technology (IST), Dean Andrew Sears, at a Microsoft location in downtown Bellevue. We would also like to use this special occasion to solicit your THON donations. Please mark your calendars, more details to follow.
  2. Spring 2017 – The Penn State Women’s softball team is planning a weekend series here against UW and Seattle U. We have a local player on the team, infielder Samantha (Sam) Shanahan, who will have the opportunity to showcase our fair city to her Penn State teammates (and showcase her teammates to us) and play in front of her family, friends and local alums for the first time in her collegiate career. Women's sports are still under-funded at Penn State and we will be sponsoring fundraising activities to help offset costs so that we can enjoy seeing one of our great, talented teams play on our turf. Dates will not be set until next fall, but we will keep you updated on progress and fundraising plans after the holidays.

Member Spotlight

Name:  Elizabeth King
Degree, Major, Year: BA Political Science, 1979
Family (spouse/partner, children): Mary Ringgenberg and our son is Peter Scott.  For silly reasons everyone in our house has a different last name.
What brought you to Seattle?  I was recruited to Seattle by Starbucks.
Favorite college memory?  Running into Joe Paterno for the very first time on the track at Rec Hall.   He was so awesome and I was so star struck.  He shook my hand and I stood there with my mouth gaping open.  What a way to make an awesome first impression!
What have you done with the club?  Attended football games, Mariner games, Storm games, Sandy Barbour initial meeting, helping with the game day raffle,  tweeting on our @PSUSeattle Twiiter feed and most recently our Board Meetings.
Anything else you’d like the club to know about you?  I grew up in Bellefonte, PA and knew Penn State was my destination school since I was about 3 years old.  I played on the Penn State Softball team and am a huge advocate for the program.
At the request of the Head Softball coach, a colleague and I are currently career mentoring the Juniors and Seniors and 2 of 7 seniors already have landed jobs!   One of the Junior players, is our own local heroine, Samantha Shanahan who went to High School at Bishop Blanchet.  You’ll hear more about our Softball team soon!
In 2013, I was named a Penn State Alumni Fellow, for which I am very honored and humbled.  WE ARE!
Cue up the Confetti, Balloons, and Champagne! HUGE CONGRATS to the PENN STATE ALUMNI - PUGET SOUND CHAPTER in being awarded the “GROUP OF DISTINCTION – LAUREL LEVEL” for the 2014/2015 SEASON!
In reaching this level of excellence, the Puget Sound Chapter puts itself in the upper tier of the affiliate groups. The “Laurel Level” is the highest level of this elite award that a chapter can receive bein
g outside of PA. This is huge and a difficult accomplishment to achieve as well as the 1st time this chapter has been awarded this award/level!
Congrats to you all for being a part of literally one of the best PS Alumni Chapters in the Nation!
