Call for a reality check as Commission's circular economy proposal hits the mat

On December 2 the European Commission adopted a new Circular Economy Package to stimulate Europe's transition towards a circular economy. EuropaBio welcomed the adoption but called for a realistic appraisal of the EU’s economy and highlighted the need for long-term, supportive policy with tangible measures and standards. "An EU circular economy strategy only makes sense in the context of a serious reality check of this situation and of the need to put in place long-term support and measures to enable the EU’s better performers to flourish", concluded Nathalie Moll, Secretary General at EuropaBio. Read more

On October 12 in Brussels, EuropaBio organised a multistakeholder conference which aimed at discussing ways to accelerate and enhance the level of access patients have to personalised medicine  (PM) products. Stakeholders were invited to reflect on what challenges are generating delays and barriers at different stages of a PM’s life-cycle. Innovation and the role of the biotech industry

This week EuropaBio is participating in the 7th European Innovation Summit taking place in the European Parliament. During the Summit’s plenary session Nathalie Moll spoke about elements that are necessary to ensure that the biotech industry contributes to Europe's goals of growth, investment and innovation. EuropaBio is organising as well a lunch debate dedicated to the benefits of IP for farmers and consumers and, together with the Agri-Food Chain Coalition and the BBI JU, a session focused on smart regulation and the need for a science-based EU policy making. Healthcare biotech

The European Medicine Agency (EMA) published the minutes of its committee for advanced therapies, which gathered in October. “Advanced therapies” is an umbrella term that covers the three new techniques that are revolutionizing modern medicine: cell therapy, gene therapy and tissue engineering. VIB announced the publication of The GMO revolution, a book that offers insight into how GM crops can help solve the current and future agricultural issues. The book focuses on the environment, the farmer and the consumer rather than on how the technology works. Industrial biotech

The EnAlgae project aims at developing algal bioenergy technologies and advancing the emerging marketplace in North West Europe. Initially the focus was about energy, specifically as a biofuel. Yet, the past four years show that there's likely to be a different future ahead for using algae - as energy in food for one thing, and much more.
