Over 130 people come out to support Art Starts at The Art Starter Party

On November 5th, 2015, we celebrated our 23rd anniversary with the annual Art Starter party at The Uptown Loft. Art Starters from all walks of life came out to celebrate - founders, donors, sponsors, supporters, staff, volunteers and community partners. We all came together for an unforgettable evening of creative play, and together we raised over $10,000 to support the creation of vibrant neighbourhoods through community-building arts projects.

This playful event was a fun opportunity for our friends and supporters to meet each other and to immerse themselves in the Art Starts experience. Participants from Villaways opened the evening with an eclectic performance; Q’Mal, Sydney and LaVane transported the audience with their lyrics and spoken-word pieces. Old Navy volunteers, with their charm and energy, hit the floor playing with yoyos and the favourite board-game of the night, Jenga. Hand Eye Society once again rocked the event with their interactive multi-player jousting video game! Our 2015 micro-grant recipient Jaicyea Smith illuminated us all with her vibrant emcee energy and golden costume. Our co-founder Elizabeth Cinello, with help from her sister, brought her famous oracle advisor “Fortuna” to life and shed light on guests’ most pressing questions. People danced, played, cheered for their favorite artist in our live painting challenge and were immersed in the magic of Baldini! Others decided to paint their own canvases facilitated by Sari Zon, our Development Manager, who also happens to be a great visual artist in her own right.

A huge thank you goes out to all of those who made this evening of creative play happen, including our Carnival Sponsor, KPMG (Hyperlink)  and our Festival Sponsor, TD (Hyperlink). We can’t wait for next year’s party!

Say hello to our new Program Director, Amiga Taylor!

Some of you may know Amiga as a multi-media artist, producer or poet. Others may know her as CKLN radio host, award-winning producer of radio documentaries, Ryerson lecturer or founder of 4Reasonz. We now know Amiga Taylor as Program Director at Art Starts and we are thrilled to welcome her energy and artistic inspiration to this position.

Amiga joined Art Starts earlier this year in the role of Program Administrator, then Program Manager. She assumed her new Program Director role earlier this month. Amiga holds a Masters Degree in Media Production and her youth leadership and advocacy initiatives in the GTA have garnered multiple awards, newspaper and magazine features. Her extensive management and teaching experience combined with 10 years of front-line work in the arts, sports and recreation contribute to her broad understanding of how the arts can evolve our city socially, intellectually and economically.

"I am honoured to be part of the Art Starts team in my new function as Program Director. I am looking forward to using my passion for community arts to continue motivating me to develop quality, meaningful arts experiences for Toronto neighbourhoods. "
