World Diabetes Congress 30 November - 4 December
|
|
In 2015, the International Diabetes Federation brings the World Diabetes Congress to Vancouver, Canada. Experts in diabetes care from around the world will exchange diabetes research and best practices. Physicians, scientists, nurses, educators and other healthcare professionals, as well as government officials, policy makers and representatives from 230 IDF Member Associations will gather to learn, discover and connect.
HCC President Sir Trevor Hassell will be present and speaking as well as HCC Youth4NCDs co-lead, Ambassador & Spokesperson for Diabetes, Vice-President, Young Leaders in Diabetes, IDF, Krystal Boyea. Many Caribbean Diabetes organisations will be at the WDC including the St. Lucia Diabetes & Hypertension Association, FHADIMIC, Dominica Diabetes Association, Diabetes Association of Barbados, Diabetes Association of Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana Diabetes Association and the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

WHO Global Coordination Mechanism on the Prevention and Control of NCDs
Dialogue on how to strengthen international cooperation on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases within the framework of North–South, South–South and triangular cooperation

Dialogue on NCDs and international cooperation will take place 30 November to 1 December 2015 (with pre-dialogue caucuses organized independently of WHO in the lead up to the Dialogue that will be held on 29 November) at the WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland. The Dialogue on ‘how to strengthen international cooperation on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases within the framework of North–South, South–South and triangular cooperation’ is organized by the WHO Global Coordination Mechanism on NCDs (WHO GCM/NCD), HCC President Professor Sir Trevor Hassell is a part of this mechanism.

Belize Cancer Society President and member of HCC Board of Directors Laura Tucker Longsworth will be in presenting 'Defender of women living with NCDs: championing the rights to health care for women living in remote and poor areas of Belize' and the experiences of the Jamaica Cancer Society and the Belize Cancer Society cervical cancer efforts will be featured through a compelling photo story.
The sessions of the Dialogue on NCDs and international cooperation will be available online in all WHO official languages through the WebEx platform. Please register to the Dialogue sessions in your preferred language. It will be necessary to register for each day of the Dialogue. Register here.

World Diabetes Walk in Antigua

The Freemans Village Youth Foundation was formed by youths from the Village of Freeman's Village in Antigua. It's young people uniting to give back to their community, to restore hope in the lives of young people who are affected by negative influences and to empower them to be good citizens. On Saturday November 14 the primary school in the Village was a buzz with adults and children who came out to listen to a talk on Diabetes and to take part in a 3 miles plus night walk. The very interactive discussion was facilitated by Dr. Tessy Fenton who is presently working at the Peadiatric unit of the country's lone public hospital. After the discussion and decked with glow lights as necklaces bracelets, foot bands and other creative ways of wearing the lights, blue balloons waving, about 60 persons set out to complete the journey escorted by the police.

The NOURISHING policy database now holds more than 260 policy actions from over 100 countries! NOURISHING now includes 14 examples of sugar taxes being implemented around the world (see “U” - Use economic tools) including the Commonwealth of Dominica. It also includes examples of policy actions, across all ten policy areas of the NOURISHING framework, being taken by countries around the world to help tackle childhood obesity. In the spirit of the WHO GCM Dialogue on Cooperation happening this coming week, this instalment of the HCC series on South South Sharing features the Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society/MWECS. A few days after celebrating his second birthday, Mathiwos Wondu un-expectedly became very ill, and after clinical investigation he was diagnosed with ALL-type Leukemia.

Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society/MWECS was born out of the touching story of Mathiwos Wondu, A group of people of different races and nationalities from three different continents, many of whom without knowing each other, tried together everything that is humanly possible to save his life. Even though their concerted efforts couldn't save Mathy's life, the group, without being frustrated by the unexpected outcome, decided to strengthen and consolidate their efforts to honor him and his cause, and as a result established Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society/MWECS. The Joint 9th World Alliance for Risk Factor Surveillance (WARFS) Global Conference and 12th Americas’ Network for Chronic Disease Surveillance (AMNET) Conference was hosted by the American University of Antigua College of Medicine, in St. John’s, Antigua, from November 18 to 20, 2015. This successful conference was the second time when the global surveillance network WARFS and the regional (Region of the Americas) surveillance network AMNET had a joint conference – the first was in Montevideo, Uruguay in 2005. It was the first time the two networks had a conference in the Caribbean.

HCC President Professor Sir Trevor Hassell was one of many esteemed international scholars presenting providing invaluable and relevant information in his presentation on non-communicable disease surveillance in the Caribbean. Sir Trevor discussed the significance of non-communicable disease and associated risk factors affecting the Caribbean. The parallel between non-communicable and communicable disease was a major theme in many of the later presentations.
With the main theme “Risk factor surveillance in the 21st century: Consolidating the past - looking into the future”, the joint conference had a number of sub-themes. These included: big data, traditional view of surveillance, positive health, non-communicable and communicable disease surveillance, and capacity building.

Let’s Stop Sugar-Coating the World’s Diet

By Dr Barry Popkin who is W. R. Kenan Distinguished Professor of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina. For the past two decades I, and many other scientists, have noted a huge rise in the use of added sugar in a large array of processed foods and soft or sugary drinks. Initially the concern was related primarily to sugary drinks. Research conducted by Richard Mattes, Barbara Rolls, and others showed that when we consumed a beverage – with or without calories – it did not lead to any changes in our food intake. For reasons we did not understand, our intake of sugary drinks, fruit juice and other caloric beverages was not compensated by a reduction in calories from food intake. Read more |
