As baby-boomers age, Emergency Departments gear up for influx of older patients over coming decades
As of summer 2015, for the first time in history, Canada officially has more people over the age of 65 than children under 15. This means over the next three decades the demand for many social services will increase, including hospital emergency departments where older adults often make up the largest proportion of patients.

Poverty: A Clinical Tool for Primary Care
Poverty is the biggest risk to low income patients' health. The Centre for Effective Practice has developed a clinical tool focusing on the impact of poverty in primary care. It is designed for a typical office visit and proposes a 3 step approach:
- screen everyone
- consider poverty as a risk factor
- intervene
The tool provides instructions and resources on how to implement these steps. Faculty member Gary Bloch is the clinical lead on the project.

Louise Nasmith Award Winner Launches Proceducate App
Faculty member Dr. Jeremy Rezmovitz, winner of DFCM's Louise Nasmith Award for research projects, launched a new app this fall, to assist in teaching and learning common minor procedural skills in family medicine. Proceducate is now available on iTunes for free, and includes a unit on foundation skills, including videos on knot tying.

Two DFCM Faculty Members Named to College of Family Physicians of Canada's Board of Directors
The CFPC held its Annual Meeting of Members (AMM) during Family Medicine Forum this November in Toronto and approved a new national governance structure. Dr. David White was named President-Elect and Dr. John Maxted, Director-at-Large. Congratulations to both faculty members for their continued leadership in family medicine at the national level.

Dr. Marla Shapiro has been awarded the McGill Alumni Global Community Service Award.
Dr. Melissa Lem has received the Young Alumni of Influence Award from the University College.

Toronto East General to become Michael Garron Hospital, with a $50M boost
Diagnosed with a rare cancer of the soft tissues, Michael died at age 13, in 1975. His dying wish was that he wouldn’t be forgotten.
To honour that wish, Garron and his wife, Berna, on Wednesday donated an unprecedented $50 million to Toronto East General Hospital. And its main campus was renamed the Michael Garron Hospital.
