NEWS! NEWS! NEWS!

Almost "au revoir" to the Data Protection Act

The prospect of EU wide data protection regulations look to be happening more quickly than we discussed back in October. For details click here.

Who says information standards aren't sexy?
They are important which is why Government Digital Service is pushing forward to define a common set of "authoritative lists you can trust". Essentially this work is trying to create some single versions of the truth or Unique Resource Identifiers to help us all talk the same language - critical if we're wanting to join up.

This is the same concept as the esd toolkit / LG Inform standards  but reaches further to join the dots across Government.
  • For the GDS Registers blog see here.
  • For iStandUK (formerly LeGSB) White Papers which explain how this type of concept can be applied see here.
  • Work on harmonising information standards is a key component in Greater Manchester's proposed information sharing roadmap. See here for related work in New York.

GUIDANCE

New secure email guidelines from Government
Government Digital Service just has published new guidelines for procuring secure cloud email. See here. What appears particularly interesting is that in this is a Secure Email Delivery Blueprint. This isn't dated but it looks new and includes some interesting developments regards encryption and the like.

We have an ongoing discussion with GDS and about the lack of sector strategy for digital communications - a straw poll at the Cheshire & Merseyside ICT Managers group showed the complexity and duplication being created by having too many email systems: Two NHS ones, PNN, CJSM, GCSx, gov.uk with encryption in places, and commercial solutions. This flies in the face of integrated "place based working" and is all the more pressing in the context of new departmental specific capabilities like NHSmail2. This will be picked up at the Local Government / PSN programme board which is on 28 January.
