Meri Kirihimete!

It's that time of the year again, and we're wrapping up what has happened in 2015...

2015 has been a year of growth for Toi Māori. Our Board and staff have been looking forward to the future to ensure that contemporary Māori art continues to grow.

This year's programme reflects the work that has been developed to work towards achieving Toi Māori's 5 objectives:
  1. Mobilise Māori artists
  2. Take our art as far as it can go
  3. Connect Māori to the indigenous world
  4. Take our people with us
  5. Take New Zealand with us
While we have celebrated our success, this year has also been one of great sadness. We lost two very important supporters of Toi Maori - Colleen Urlich and Manos Nathan. Their support over the years had been invaluable, and they will be greatly missed by many.
Ngā manaakitanga o te
kirihimete kia koutou katoa.

Ka hoki ngā mahara ki a rātau kua
whai i te tai ahiahi, ko tātau ngā
kanohi ora e whai nei i te tai-
awatea, e mihi nui ana i te tau hou.

Aroha tino nui
Nā mātau ngā kaimahi o
Toi Māori Aotearoa
May you all have a safe
and wonderful Christmas.

We cast our minds to those who have passed on at the setting
of the sun, as we the living look
forward to a dawn rise and
welcome in the new year.

With much love and respect,
Toi Māori Aotearoa
PAO PAO PAO AUCKLAND

Pao Pao Pao Auckland was held in mid July. The programme links emerging and established Māori musicians. The aim of the initiative is to nurture and develop musicianship and capability in young Māori pursuing music by using th Teina-Tuakana (junior-senior) structure, as envisioned by former Chair of Puatatangi, the late Dr. Hirini Melbourne.

Maori Arts Internship Programme 2015

2015 has been a great year for the MAI Programme. Our interns are now coming to the end of their placements, having made great impacts and learnt a lot.

We would like to thank our interns; Chloe Cull, Pehia King and Jared Mathieson-Hiakita for taking on the challenge.

We would also like to thank our host organisations: The Dowse Art Museum, Lower HuttPataka Museum & Gallery, PoriruaThe Court Theatre, Christchurch for providing great learning environments for our interns.

The MAI Programme will continue next year with the selection of the hosts and interns already under way.
Uku Rere | Nga Kaihanga Uku & Beyond

Uku Rere: Nga Kaihanga Uku, the first major survey of the contemporary Maori ceramics movement in Aotearoa, came to an end, with the final exhibition at Tauranga Art Gallery which closed on 2 August.

The exhibition featured a selection of hand-built ceramic art works by five Maori clay artists: Baye Riddell, Manos Nathan, Colleen Urlich, Wi Taepa and Paerau Corneal. They are founding and senior members of Nga Kaihanga Uku, the national Maori clayworkers' association.

We have enjoyed watching the exhibition tour around New Zealand, captivating audiences as it went.

The exhibition was developed and toured by Pataka Art+Museum in collaboration with Toi Maori Aotearoa and with the generous support of Creative New Zealand.
