November 2015 Newsletter
Rei Hotoda, Conductor
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the most recent tragic world events. My heart goes out to all of those suffering. I strongly believe that through music we are able heal and connect. Music comforts me in times of sadness and confusion. We must do whatever we can to not only support music, but make sure it flourishes so that all the world can be touched by it.

This November I was beyond fortunate to be surrounded by so much unbelievable music making from world premieres to sing-ins. I closed down October and opened up November with my debut with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and the announcement that I am a finalist in the Fresno Philharmonic’s search for their next music director. From there, I covered Music Director Thierry Fischer leading the Utah Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere and USO commission of Andrew Norman’s percussion concerto, Switch, featuring Colin Currie as soloist. I finished out the month conducting the USO in a French and American program at Dixie College and a Messiah Sing-In at Abravanel Hall. Looking ahead, education concerts with the USO and a return to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra are on the menu for December.
Ovations, Ovations and More Ovations
Messiah Sing-in With the Utah Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

Not one, not two, but five curtain calls were had for my performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Utah Symphony Orchestra's annual sing-in on November 28. It was a full house and the orchestra and chorus along with my amazing soloists—Jessica Jones, soprano; Sarah Coit, mezzo-soprano; Christian Sanders, tenor; and Markel Reed, baritone—brought the house to its feet for very good reason: they were absolutely wonderful. Sing-Ins can be complicated, but the musicians on the stage coupled with the amazing 100% participation by the audience blew the rafters off of Abravanel Hall. This was one of those concerts for the history books.
On the Horizon with the USO
Holiday and Educations Concerts Abound!

Over several weeks in December, I will be leading the Utah Symphony Orchestra in the works of Dvořák, Shostakovich, Dukas, Copland, Elgar, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky as part of our on-going education concerts. These programs, entitled “Celebrations!”, focus on how music has been used throughout history to signify certain events and how music is being used today to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the USO.

I will close out 2015 with two special family concerts with the Utah Symphony Orchestra one in Ogden, UT and the other in Abravanel Hall. “Here Comes Santa Claus!” will feature music from the film The Snowman and other holiday favorites. It is sure to be fun for the whole family. For more information, visit the Utah Symphony Orchestra's website at www.utahsymphony.org.
Sold Out Fantastical Debut
North Carolina Symphony

On October 31-November 1, I made my guest conducting debut with the North Carolina Symphony in programs that featured the music from the scores of the beloved Harry Potter films.  There were three sold out concerts: two on October 31 and one on November 1. The concerts on October 31 took place in Meymandi Concert Hall and the performance on November 1 took place at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.
Standing Room Only
French and American Program with the Utah Symphony Orchestra in
St. George, UT

On November 24 I hit the road with the Utah Symphony Orchestra for a program of Copland’s The Tender Land Suite, Bernstein’s Fancy Free (Ballet music), Ravel’s Boléro, and Gershwin’s An American in Paris at Dixie College in St. George, UT. It was a completely sold out concert with an audience that was so receptive and welcoming—I honestly believe that this combination makes an orchestra play brilliantly, and the Utah Symphony did not disappoint. Here is a link to the press release on my website.
Happy Returns
Concerts with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Steve Bell

On December 17, I will return to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to collaborate with singer/songwriter Steve Bell in “Steve Bell Christmastide—A Journey Through Advent, Nativity and Epiphany”. The concert event will take place at Centennial Concert Hall and is sure to be standing room only. Here is a link to more information.
