President's Note

Greetings NYSMEANs,

The annual NYSMEA holiday party and lecture will be at Tackapausha Museum on Saturday, December 5th from 6:30-9:30 pm. John Turner will be the guest speaker and the topic will be Long Island Wildlife and Plum Island’s Future. John Turner is the author of The Other Island and co-founder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society.

    • 4:00 pm - Board Meeting at the home of Flo and Lou Siegel (contact Holiday@NYSMEA.org for the address)
    • 6:30 pm - Party at Tackapausha Museum, 2225 Washington Ave., Seaford, NY 11783
    • 8:00 pm - Presentation by guest speaker John Turner
  • RSVP - You must send an email to Holiday@NYSMEA.org by Wednesday, December 2nd to confirm you are coming and to tell us of your voluntary pot luck contribution (if any). Ask for the location of the board meeting at the Siegel's house if you would like to join us – all are welcome!
  • Cost - Free to members (Only $20.00 to join!) - $5 for guests
  • Food - NYSMEA will provide dinner-- meat and veggie sandwiches, side dishes, drinks and coffee. You are welcome to bring an additional dish, dessert or bottle of wine if you like.
  • Parking - Free, on premises; handicapped accessible

Other NYSMEA News...

  • Tom Greene and Blanca Ching from NYSMEA led many students on a successful beach cleanup at Denyse Wharf on October 18. Over 75 people attended, earning community service for picking up marine debris and bringing marine environmental awareness to an historic site.
 
  • NYSMEA members attended the New York Marine Science Consortium’s annual conference, Protecting Our Coastal Environments: The Outlook for Green and Gray Solutions, held at SUNY Maritime College on October 24. Research students and professors presented their amazing projects.
 
 
  • Mark your calendar for the SCONYC conference on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Stuyvesant High School. Completed workshop proposal forms are due by December 4. Contact the program committee at sconyc2016presenters@gmail.com if you have any questions.

 

Save the dates!

  • The NMEA conference is in Orlando, FL from June 25 - July 1, 2016. Go to FMSEA.ORG/NMEA16 for more information.
 
  • The 2016 NYSMEA Annual Conference will be held at Stony Brook University’s Southampton campus in late September, 2016.

Following the Board Meeting at Lou's home (4-5:30 PM, send email for address), we will be setting up the Tackapausha Museum for our Holiday Party from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, with a speaker from 8:00 - 9:00 PM.
