Cathedral Hive Plans and top bars - for the DIY gift!
Detailed 24" x 36" Cathedral Hive plans

"Your Cathedral hive plans arrived the other day and I have already started building the hexagon-shaped bars. I am a self-taught woodworker, but I find the plans relatively easy to follow (i.e. fantastic detail!) and do not anticipate any problems.       ~ Barry and Anne, Massachusetts

Installing Bees into your Cathedral Hive

Installing Bees into your Cathedral Hive
Bee Guardians in Australia and New Zealand are the first group of people to install bees into their new Cathedral Hives!

Read Corwin's simple techniques that will make installing bees in your Cathedral Hive a breeze.

One of the first things you will notice with your new Cathedral Hive is when you line up the hexagonal
top bars across the hive on the support ledge, they are delicately balanced. This will soon change after the bees begin to draw out comb and 'glue' everything together with propolis making the bars sit firmly in place. To make everything good and stable for installing the bees, you will want to make sure you have the front blank board and the false back in place. Use the false back to keep the bars upright as you continually add more bars toward the back.

New Hives Plans for the Ventilated Roofs

DIY Ventilated Roof Plans for your Top bar Hive

We have had many requests for ventilated roof plans for the Golden Mean and the Original Back Yard Hive. We now have easy to follow plans available in a full sheet architectural drawing, 24" x 36", for the Golden Mean, Original BackYardHive and the new Cathedral Hive.

With these plans you should be well on your way to have your hive nicely covered and protected from the elements.

Our roof designs are modeled after the way that most house roofs are constructed, with a vented peak. I wanted to mention a few idea's concerning the construction of the roof. Be sure that you add the ridge vent and the end hole vents as describes in the plans.

2016 Bee Guradianship Classes Announced!
Corwin at Sustainable Settings in Carbondale, CO teaching a weekend intensive.
Workshops in Colorado & Washington

Boulder, CO
Session I
- Beginner
Feb 20
This class is for those just getting started. We will cover basic bee ecology,
how the bees communicate with each other in the hive, explain why bees are
a super-organism, and the importance of honeybee genetic diversity. You
will learn how to set up the hive for bees, obtaining bees, catching a swarm
and getting the bees into the hive. You will learn the reasoning behind
treatment-free, natural beekeeping (it may surprise you). We will demonstrate
how to work with the bees in an altruistic, gentle manner so that a symbiotic
relationship is formed with the bees. And if there are combs to harvest, we
will demonstrate how to harvest and process honey comb.

Session II - Intermediate
Feb 21

This class is for the bee guardian who has taken the beginner class
and has a colony of bees. In this class you will learn an in-depth working
relationship with the bees.
The class will cover a deeper understanding
of the intimate workings of the colony and the brood nest, so that the
bee guardian can confidentially work their hive and feel comfortable with
interacting with the bees. We will cover
spring harvesting, queen-less hives,
over wintering and processing all comb types. We will also demonstrate
the new Cathedral Hive designed by Corwin. This is a chance to see how
this new hive works and how it is an evolution in top bar beekeeping!

NEW!!!
Session III - 2016 Spring Assessment  & Harvesting
using the Bear Snack Method
March 24 & 25

This weekend workshop is for the bee guardian who has taken both the Session I & II
workshops. This will be a hands-on class assessing overwintered hives,
when to harvest combs, which type of combs to harvest, when and how
to rotate out brood combs, how many combs to take to open up the brood nest,
and how many honeycombs to leave the bees until the thereat of cold weather has passed.
This 2 day, in-depth workshop is hands-on, going through several hives
for assessment, brood comb determination and harvesting honeycombs
in the spring. Our methodology is to harvest combs in the spring not the
fall. In the spring time the bees have used all the combs they needed to
survive the winter and they want space in the hive to store fresh nectar
and pollen to rear their young.

NEW!!!
Cathedral Hive Workshop
April 30, 2016

Join Corwin for the day learning about the new Cathedral Hive!
This will be a hands-on workshop exploring this new hive design
while working with the colony in the new hives. Many of the
management techniques are similar to a normal top bar hive but
there are some big differences in ease of use and techniques.
Come learn about this new hive and why it is the next evolution
in top bar hive designs!
