People, Places, and Things

This Month Collecting & Investing in Decoys

Jerry enjoys collecting and trading decoys because for him decoys represent American Folk Art.  He has 40 years experience carving, painting, collecting, and trading decoys.  If you are considering purchasing or collecting decoy or shorebird carvings;  Jerry has three tips for getting started.

1)  Focus on a maker or region
Jerry suggests attending decoy and wild life shows and festivals.  Get to know the decoy carvers, collectors and dealers.  Read magazines and newsletters about wildlife and carving.  You'll find informative articles about the subject.  Research the maker and region that interests you.  Jerry feels it is most important to Collect What You Like.  Jerry likes and has focused on learning as much as possible about Mason Decoys.

2)  Handle the Decoy
Examine and feel  the decoy.  It should not feel soft unless it is new. It should not smell like oil or paint unless it is new.  Look at the bottom for signatures, writing, brands, marks.  You want to avoid copies or counterfeits if you are collecting  work of a particular carver.  Jerry looks for certain things when he handles Mason decoys.  There is a distinct shape,  profile, and paint.  Masons' have painted on the wood eyes, tack eyes, or glass eyes depending on the grade.  Masons' do not have brands or signatures; however some Masons' have their grade stenciled on the bottom.  There are 3 Grades.
Standard Grade:  may have painted on the wood eyes, tack eyes, or glass eyes.
Challenge Grade:  have glass eyes.  The bill is defined with a V gauged carving.  It is larger and has more detailed painting.
Premiere Grade:   have glass eyes.  Hollowing is optional.   Hollowing refers to taking out the center of the wood body to produce a lighter decoy that floats on water.   The bill has more detailed relief carving and there is more detailed painting.

3)  Consult with Experts
Talk with a knowledgeable dealer or collector before you invest in an antique decoy.  Decoy carvers that have known Jerry and his Dad still keep in touch with Jerry and purchase eyes for their decoys from him at www.GlassEyesOnLine.com

We recently attended the 2016 Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Maryland for Jerry's birthday and had a wonderful time reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones.   I photographed some of their carvings and recorded short videos of some demonstrations.  If you are interested; check out my Blog Post Links:   Nov.17 and  Nov. 24
