BBC presenter speaks to Sixth Form students

BBC presenter Justin Webb visited Davenant Foundation School, Loughton, to speak to a group of Sixth Form students.

The Radio 4 Today programme presenter has worked in Washington, Brussels and Moscow as well as in war zones in Bosnia and the Middle East.

He spoke about his life in journalism and recounted interviews with top politicians including Barrack Obama.

He answered questions about British and American politics, the life of a BBC presenter and trends in news broadcasting - especially the growth of social media.

Students who are interested in journalism were particularly encouraged by Mr Webb.

He told them that a career in news gathering was exciting and rewarded those who enjoy ascertaining the truth and in using language skilfully and precisely.

Student Tim Adams, who is editor of the school's Sixth Form newspaper, said he found talking to Justin Webb “interesting and inspiring” not least when the broadcaster showed interest in the newspaper and gave advice about how to develop experience while at school and university.

Headteacher Chris Seward said: “It was a great opportunity to listen to a broadcaster from one of the most listened to programmes on radio.

"Students learned from his insights and encouragement."
